    Need some info

First off I just found this site yesterday and I have been reading as much as I could since and I love all the info.

    Here's my question;
Lets say I go in to the dept I want to work for (Det,MI) and I do all the tests ..and I pass with no re-takes,I ace the background check (I have nothing to hide there) and they send me to the academy...

How long does it take to get from the first test to the academy? (with no snags)
Ball park or if you know for a fact.

Also I am getting married in July 2003 do you think I would be able to take a honeymoon?

Also any advice on tests and the hiring process would be great.

    Thanks..

As far as wait time between your test and the actual academy start date would depend on your department. You can always call them and ask when the next class starts. Those dates are set ahead well in advance. My hubby had to wait 6 months for his class, but we knew in the meantime when it started.

For the honeymoon question.....I think that'll depend on how long you've been working at that time. My hubby gets 2.5 days a month (I think). Some departments won't allow you to collect on this until you get out of training or for a certain amount of time on the payroll. So, it'll depend on your hiring package or rather your department and how much time you save up from your employment date to wedding day. Someone else will have more information about this too.

LEOhopeful--How long it takes from first test to the academy depends upon the agency and how quickly they can process the applicants. It also depends upon how many investigators they have working in the process. I have no idea how long it takes the Detroit PD to do process their applicants BUT, my best educated guess is somewhere between 4 months to a year.:D It really depends upon a number of factors.

Well, assuming that you get hired, graduate the academy, etc. It will depend upon the department's policy about this issue. You might entertain the idea of maybe getting married before or sometime after your planned 07/2003 date. This is obviously something you and your finace' may need to seriously discuss in-depth BEFORE you take the plunge into marriage.:D

Finally, I don't know what you know about the Detroit PD. Like most any large agency, it has it's share of serious problems, good/bad points, etc. And without a doubt, I am certain DPD has some awesome cops within it's ranks as well. BUT,.....

If I may suggest if you are not aware of this site, please check out the following web site:

I think you'll find the information, at the very least, interesting. I hope you will objectively review it and come to your own conclusions. It may or may not be helpful to you.;)

Regardles of what you decide to do, best of luck!

    LEohopefull,

I am in Port Huron I applyied for DPD in 2000. I made it to the final stage before the academy and it took about 6 months so look at waiting around 6-10 months total before the academy assuming when ur done an academy has already started then you will wait about another 2-5 months.. Depending how many they run at one time.

    LEOhopeful--

Usually, at most PD's, someone in the department (usually also a sworn officer) teaches a lot of the defense/tactical-realted training. If you are interested in this "stuff," you'll likely have to pay your dues (a few years) on the streets in patrol FIRST and then, if you have the appropriate training & experience, you may have the ability to get on board with the academy staff to teach recruits.

I don't know anyone on the Detroit PD and I do not know how DPD goes about moving people arround within the department to specialized positions such as an academy trainer. But, I feel reasonably certain that is generally likely what you can expect in regards to your question. That is generally the traditional method one undergoes.

By the way, did you ever check out that link in my other post? Just curious......

    Best of luck.
