    Nepotism?

What is the nepotism policy at your department?

I am able to apply with the Denver Police Department next summer.
My Grandfather was a Denver Sergeant who is retired and my Dad is a Lieutenant with 28 years of service and he is retiring in 3 years.

Would I get favored in anyway as long as I pass the tests?

    Thanks.

Nepotism is basically giving one's relative a better shot at a job than someone else. For example if your dad is the cheif and he gives you the job even though there are more qualified applicants.

Ok I understand now, in answer to the original question if a person was favoured over someone else because they knew people in the job then that is wrong and should be frowned upon. Everyone should be judged on their merits and nothing else.

The local Sheriff Department has a policy that forbids the hiring of immediate family to any posisition within the same department.

Of course they are getting sued buy a guy I know cause his dad is a dep and he applied to a open road job and they handed him the policy and told him can't hire him until his dad retires. They then turn around and hired the undersheriff's kid on the road. So now there is a law suit on the table and a union battle to get the US kid off the road.

I personally disagree with giving preference to those who have family members in the dept. but that's just me.

darrell, that sounds like BS, I bet he wins that lawsuit.

We hand out legacy points to the final score on the entrance tests. There is a whole points system we have based on NYFD's system. We do have brothers in the same station etc, I have a husband and wife working with me on the same shift, but they are on diffrent trucks. It hard choice to remove legacy because we get alot of firefighters who come from a long line of firefighters, just as in the case of PDs, a faimly has a record of serving in one service or the other, sometimes both. To this date we haven't had any problems that can be assocaited with working with a relation.

Our policy is that an immediate relation (father, brother, aunt, etc..) can not directly supervise the relative. As long as the father was not the son's supervisor, it would be ok. Husband/wives are not allowed in any form. So far that has never been challenged.

People should NOT be given ANY preference because their grandpa, uncle, brother , wife etc are in the same profession. Is this fair to the non-legacy person who tried hard and scored well only to be upset by a relative of another app ? Firefighting may be in your blood but it DOESN'T make you a better firefighter.

We have a father and son at our dept but the son went through ALL of our hiring requirements and wasn't even high on the list at first.

I always thought that was called having a 'legacy'
GeorgiaCarry.org is an influential civil rights organization committed to not resting until the State of Georgia ceases all infringements upon the people's natural right to keep and bear arms that is protected by both the constitutions of Georgia and the USA. It's members include prominent legislators, captains of industry, members of the armed forces, police officers, parents, academics, lawyers, and citizens from all walks of life.

Having a legacy is fine, somehow gaining a hiring advantage because of it isn't.

It is only 3 points not much, there are other ways to make points, service, being a local, etc. I can PM you a list if you would like, this is also comnmon practice in colleges, PDs, Employers around the world. Never said that firefighting being in your blood makes you a better firefighter.

Yes, I agree. I came into this dept. Without any extra points but thats the way it is and untill everyone steps up and fightsit, it will never change. Though it is policy we don't hire anyone that isn't within 30 minutes of the station, because of the critical time factor involved. So if they want to work they have to move.
