Real K-9 job

Ok, K-9 Officers, Do you get your own dog and train it or how this work? Im not understaning about this?? Help here??
Some day if I have the time, I might wanna be a K-9 Officer. I wanna know more about this.. Im new at this K-9 police stuff and wanna know how much a class is and how many years you need to take it and all the other fun stuff... plz w/b

Whether a dog is purchased for the handler by the department they are employed with or if the handler purchases the dog with their personal funds all depends upon the department they work for. I have seen both methods used. Some departments will purchase a "green" dog and then have an in-house trainer work with the dog and handler while others have contract with trainers who conduct the training. Some departments will purchase the dog as well as the training of the dog and handler from a vendor. Best bet to have your questions answered would be to make contact with a K-9 handler from your area and ask him/her. Costs vary as does the training. I have never met a K-9 handler that did not have at least a few years on the street under his/her belt before being assigned to the K-9 Unit.

The phrase "I'm new at this K-9 police stuff" does kind of sound like you already have a dog, so I wouldn't go biting off Metallic4's head right off the bat.

As far as I know around here, a department picks out a dog, and they train the dog and Officer together, that way they will always have that bond and will be able to work as a team.

Umm, no I don't have a dog, My friends uncle has one and Im trying to understand this stuff so if I do have the time later on my life, I will know this stuff and pass it.. SO LEAVE ME ALONE.. No need to shout angel, I was just trying to help you understand what Metallic4 ment. I am not a K-9 cop, however I know quite a bit about the profession, and I was indeed trying to help. I see you are from Wisconsin too, so maybe my info may be of some help. If it's not, I apologize.

Well, like I said, the departments in my area buy a dog, then appoint an Officer to work with it. The Officer and K-9 then take classes on drug sniffing ect together so they grow a good relationship between them. Your best bet is always going to be to talk to your local PD and see what they have to say.
