we all have different problem we deal with in our lifes. The question was not "I barely know a guy who lives 2 streets down from me, should I turn him in or not?"
This story is more complicated for that person, thats why he/she wanted to hear our opinions on what to do.

    Simple Answer to the question.

Turn his *** in now. You can't go around being scared of who will do what to you and how they will do it. Thats just life, you can accept it or let it eat you apart and give you a ulcer.

Make the call. The best is to the police. If you are squeamish aboout that; if they are under any parole/probation supervision, contact the Parole Officer. Current criminal behavior and warrants will have a bearing on their staying out of jail. Make sure the Parole Officer understands your concerns. Depending on your state, the PO may be able to arrest for the warrants.

I am meeting with my cousin this morning ( local LE) and I am hoping I can trust him to keep my name anonymous.

Easy folks! I'm of the same mindset as you but not all are. If this is legit, then this is something he needs an assist with, not a lecture.

Family dynamics can be a tricky thing. I do agree though that putting them away will be in the best interest of all from what you have posted. You mention not wanting to start a war, but it appears that a good portion of the family lives in a state of siege? Perhaps the battle has been started already and maybe it's time to hit back?

I can't speak for AL specifically as State Courts can insist on higher standards than the US Courts require. In WA we can treat informants as confidential but they do have to meet certain criteria. Tips on warrant suspects requires much lower credibility than some other matters. If you're on the up and up it shouldn't be a problem.

Filing restraining orders is always a good thing. Yes it's just a piece of paper but if you roll it up real tight you can always poke someone in the eye with it. And...L/E can use it as a tool that might relieve you of some of the concerns you have about being the heavy.

I would suggest not spending alot of time talking here, but to contact your local PD or Sheriff's Office and explain it to them. We're pretty good at coming up with solutions when given the chance.

    Good Luck

You'll be doing everyone a favor bringing those guys into contact with LE.

I do appreciate your concern about being a rat. Ratting people out is a very very serious step. I have a lot of sympathy for the code of conduct that says "we take care of our own business and the police are an occupying authority." I know it is not that simple, and that our democratic processes are supposed to make our police into something besides an occupying authority, but that is another discussion.

In this case, you need to do something to protect the rest of your family from these two bad apples. I would snitch them anonymously. I would help the police with wiretaps or anything else they need for putting together a case to get these guys away from your family.

Restraining orders work pretty well. However, they are not ALWAYS good.

Ever hear about Morgan Lamar of Bangor, Maine? She was a 5-year old girl killed by her foster mother. Her biological mother had a restraining order keeping her away, but the facts of the case show pretty clearly that the bio mother was fine, and the state overreacted to some issues at the home.

Restraining orders are seen as "better safe than sorry," but they come with plenty of their own dangers.
