I am a female, 42 years old, pretty healthy, and I am getting ready to apply to the academy. What are my chances of getting on with an angency after graduation? I already have my 2 year degree in Criminal Justice.
Thanks,
Kelly

This can't possibly be answered accurately for you without knowing what agencies you are planning on applying to. Every state, city and county could possibly have their own requirements regarding age...

Well that depends. Are you pretty, healthy or pretty healthy. :D Nevermind, I'm giddy. Must be the heat.
Giddy? teheee...yep, it's the heat now. Here is 86 but felt like 99 or 100 degree  I never feel like gettin' hot...last month was weird. <sigh>
doesn't matter what age...as long as bein' in a good physical and health plus strength. Good luck. Chex out the PDs' requirements and see if one is fittin' enough for you to join. Again, good luck, Kelly.![]()

ALthough age may not be able to be a legal consideration in your quest for a job, it is nonetheless a factor that will be considered by a prospective employer. You need to "sell" yourself as a GOOD candidate by your performance in the academy. IMHO.

Age most certainly can be a factor... Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the maximum age for a police candidate under Civil Service (which is 90% of the PD's here) is either 34 or 36 - not sure off the top of my head. There are a few exceptions to this rule (addition of military time, etc) but for the most part it applies to most PDs in Massachusetts.
So again, it depends on the agency and it's specific guidelines.

I went to an academy with a lady who'd been hired by the state troopers and she was 42, a marathon runner, and former military. She did fine, though she quit later for personal reasons.

I went to the academy with a woman who was 48. I also worked with a guy who went to the academy after a career in the Navy (age of 47). Here in Maine, you only go to the academy after you have been hired, so they found a way to do it
I kinda like how the academy is here. You get hired, then you go to the adademy. So while you are there for 18 weeks, at least you are getting paid for it (and the academy is free for cadets. The dept. has to pay, but we pay nothing and get paid while there). But they only pay for for a 40 hour week :(
