    Silly question?

I was just wondering, what is the standard procedure for pulling over a motorcyclist? I ask because when you pull over someone in a vehicle and, for instance, they would get out of it just after you pulled them over, you would concieve that as a threat. But what is the motorcyclist supossed to do? If he gets off his bike, is that taken as just as much of a threat as someone exiting their vehicle?

Here they make them shut off the bike, hand over the keys, take off the helmet and get off the bike and stand at the front bumper of the patrol car.

I make them stay on their bike, with both feet on the ground and the kickstand up. That way if they quickley try to get off the bike for whatever reason, it will be more difficult since the bike will tip over. And of course they must remove their helmet.

That's a smart strategy... thanks for the input. In other words, if someone did get off of their bike without you telling them to, you would indeed take that as a threat?

Our guys make them shut the bike off and place the keys either on the seat or in their helmet (yes, helmet comes off).
And yes, some make bikers stand with their kickstand up, but that is a learned way of doing things, and not taught (for some odd reason).

Shut the bike off, stay ON the bike unless told to dismount. With our new no helmet law ( which I think is crazy) , more often than not they aren't wearing one. It has a side benefit though, it is easier to ID them if in a pursuit !!

A lot of mc operators do not have a mc endorsement, state inspection and otherwise they are good for warrants. So when probable cause rears it's cute head, I'll stop a bike anyday.

I'll take this a step or two further. I've been stopped once on my 18 speed (yes, these things do happen). I stayed straddled on my bike.

Now, when I ride, most of my ID and stuff is in a hipster (not all, I carry another ID in a neck wallet). The hipster carries most of the stuff I would normally carry if in "civilian clothes" but what it doesn't carry is my pocket knife. Why? Because if I am in the situation where I am asked to produce ID, I don't want my knife to be in the same 'pocket' as my ID. I don't want the other person to be getting nervous.

In Texas the officers just bump 'em with the fender of the patrol car while they are still moving. That takes care of all that "will the run or fight?" BS. ;)

We had a 19 year old run from the deps here on a Hyabusa (SP) stolen and the scaout car was like a turtle going after a horse. The next county over from us set up stop sticks on the county line of the E-Way and he hit them at over 170 MPH. They said that he came off that bike like a rocket and landed in a pond some 65 yards away. All he had was a broken collar bone. Spikes are deadly to anyone on a bike, but they said it was the best entertainment they had ever seen.

Using Stop Sticks or other spike systems on an m/c is just plain stupid. In the training I recall them saying NOT to use them on motorcycles. Using them in violation of training and department policy would just open yourself up to severe liability.
