Does a police officer have the permission to do a background check on anyone they want for whatever reason?

What do you mean by background check? Like run their name for criminal records just for fun? Nope, can't do that. For example, if I was an officer and I had a daughter, I couldn't run her boyfriends name through the system. You have to have a valid reason, and can get fired for not. There was one officer in LA I believe who was running celebrities names and selling results to tabloids. He got the boot.
Background checks are only to be done for an official inquiry. Every time I do one , there is a record that I requested it. Same with running tags and drivers license info in my car computer.

Thanks, and by the way Metallic, good example. That's exactly what i was thinking when I posted the question.![]()
But I am a PI and I can do it for whatever reasons I want

lol!
Im sure theres many an officer out there that abuses the system. Infact Ive heard of cases where some cops were using it to stalk people, women in specific.
Well isn't that comforting.
NOPE. I would say some, a few, a minority perhaps. But not "a many".Originally Posted by tenfour

Do you have access to the same info as members of the gov. law enforcement system? Like when the police check on someone, do you get the same information they get?Originally Posted by txinvestigator1
Sorry for not wording that better....
I was stopped for driving indecisively after work late one night. LEO wanted to see if I was drunk. I thought that was good. When he saw I was not drunk, he still checked to see if there are warrants and stuff like that on me. I think that is wrong, because it was unrelated to the reason he stopped me.
I know he had legal rights, but I think LEO checks on people too much.
Another example: my wife and I are parked on the side of a road. Two LEOs come to our car to 'check our safety.' The only safety issue we had was being approached by two armed individuals, approaching us suddenly, nearly giving me a heart attack.
Guess what? How do you think LE makes alot of their cases? By traffic stops or ID'ing subjects. I suppose you don't know Timothy McVeigh was stopped for speeding and then arrested for the OKC bombing. The police need to know who they are dealing with. That's why they check you for warrants.Originally Posted by tee_ahn_dough
Here's an idea: don't park by the side of the road  Kinda silly isn't it? I know, it's hard to grasp. If you draw attention to yourself (drive like an idiot, park on the side of the road) you are gonna come into contact with the cops. Deal with it.
