Not specific to the FBI, but all FBI positions require a Top Secret Clearance. Many federal agencies use Confidential, Secret, or Top Secret Clearances. There are also different accesses you can get, like a TS/SCI is a Top Secret Clearance with SCI Access, which is Sensitive Compartmented Information. So there is not really a "FBI Clearance".

I think what they are referring as "FBI clearance" is having your record checked through the FBI NCIC data base for any arrests or convictions.

What Group9 said...If you were asked about 'FBI Clearance' and it wasn't related to a federal position, I would more than likely assume that it was regarding you criminal record.

I believe an "FBI Check" in civilian terms or as it relates to a non-internal postition or background, consist of not only running you thru NCIC but it also encompasses a finger print check, I have also heard rumors it runs you for any history of serious mental illness, etc.

The FBI doesn't keep records of mental illness in NCIC. You can have a criminal history done with either identifiers like name, dob, ssn or you can send in fingerprints. You can even e-mail them in now.

    Group9,
I believe I never stated the FBI "keeps" records on mental patients or history of an applicants mental illness, only that the FBI check was rumored to encompass researching to verify there was no official record or issues related..such as an admission to a state hospitol, suicide attempt, etc.
You can be a complete wack job & still have never committed a crime on paper, which would hit the NCIC.. correct..??
I can pretty much assure you though, if your ran & found to have a documented serious mental history, it would become part of thier records & certainly factored into any decision that would be based on the FBI check to begin with...
I have been thru 2 seperate FBI checks of increasing levels during my time with DOD, I was never informed of what they looked at specifically or why, since I passed both, but I do know with some certainty, what they would record, if found in the course of one.

I guess I am still confused. If someone has a conviction, they cannot get FBI clearance? I would think that it should be only limited to felonies?

I just checked. It's 7'6" in the parking garage on the west side of the building, and 6'8" in the underground garage.

I know what I am asking it is obvious that nobody can help me. No problem. I just need to know what FBI clearance was and how to obtain it.

Well if you know what you are asking then put it in context. WHO is asking you if you are able to get "FBI Clearance"? Ask them if they mean a security clearance, or a background (NCIC, etc.) check?

Your question is very vague, even if you don't realize it, and that is why everyone is having a hard time giving you a clear and definite answer.

The FBI does not track mental illness. There is no centralized record keeping of that type of thing. The FBI records division concerns itself with criminal records only. As least that division that holds records where FBI clearance would be required by other LE agancies, state agencies, etc.

For example, in Texas, to be in the Investigations or Security industry, one must never have been convicted of a felony, among other things. Our regulatory agency requires that each applicant submit a set of prints for "FBI Clearance". The FBI does nothing more than return the results of that search to the state agency.

The state agency determines of the result is a 'clearance' or not.

    TX,
You normally are correct on most threads we have both replied to, I am only basing my response on the 2 FBI checks that I went thru many years back & what I was told thru the rumor mill when I asked "what/who/when/where & why" during my 1st one...I do know there are different types & levels of checks that can be done, so I guess "maybee1010" needs to give us a few more details, because now he is talking about "FBI Clearance" in his last post, which is a whole different thing then an "FBI Check"...hell, now I am confused..lol
