    Regarding History

I'm a college student studying criminal justice at a local university to become a police officer. I worked at a gas station a few years ago and took car wash money periodically to buy food to be delivered to my work. My fellow employees and managers did the same, because we worked alone and did not get breaks or lunch. I am not saying that this justifies my actions, but I am self-concious about it because we were never given formal permission to do this. Looking back at it, I realize that the correct thing to do would have been to ask the owner about getting a lunch bonus or something like that. My questions is basically this: Will revealing something like this during my interviews or polygraph disqualify me or be a major disadvantage? The above statement is the truth, but for some reason I feel guilty about it. I would never do it again, and will tell the complete truth about this when I am asked about it because I realize that theft at work is a serious matter.

What I have relized talking to people is not to volentary information like that but be prepared to answer questions on that, expecailly if there is a write up on it somewhere...

It may or may not get you disqualified. I have a few minor work violations at my first job that will probably be brought out but I have such a good record on everything else that is should not be a problem. (look at my thread to see what I mean). Plus I am getting a recomendation from my old manager so that should help. Not that it was bad or anything at the time...

    Good Luck :D

I never recieved any write-ups or verbal notices of any kind (nor did any fellow employees). I did some thinking after reading your post, and I think that possibly taking some kind of volunteer position at the local police department could help if I were to be asked about this (even if I weren't, I think it would be a wonderful experience). I've been looking into this possibility for a while now after seeing volunteer job postings on billboards and websites, and think it's a good idea at any rate. Thanks for the input, and I would like to hear from others as well.

I think you should be upfront and honest about your background. They don't want officers who cover things up. They will ask on your background if you've ever taken anything from work and if you don't tell them and they find out, you don't stand a chance of being hired. And if you lie and they find out and hire you anyway, do you really want to work at a department like that? Your first thought was right on when you said you "will tell the complete truth about this." That's the way to go. No one is a saint. Feel bad about your actions, but never feel bad about having integrity.
In life's small things be resolute and great
To keep thy muscle trained: know'st thou when Fate
Thy measure takes, or when she'll say to thee,
"I find thee worthy; do this deed for me?"

    Nemo me impune lacessit.
