Condition yourself to drink large amounts of coffee and operate on a few hours of sleep.
Get ready to hear the cops bragging about how fun a call was, or how many people they took down, all while you know you are tied to the chair.
Psych yourself up to listen to crazy people talking about ghosts in their attick, their 5 year old won't come out of the room, my wife just smacked me, what do I do, and so on, without trying to laugh.

One of the dispatchers for the city had a guy call one time and say. I have a major emergency and I need the fire department right away. She asked him what for and he said my toilet is clogged and the water is running onto the floor. Before she hung up she yelled. "We are 911 not a damn rotoruter you idiot." 10 days later she was allowed to return to work. lol Some people.
lol omg i just hope i get that job its a step closer
Make sure to keep us updated. we like to hear about newbies getting jobs.

Are you wanting to make a career at dispatching or are you trying to get your foot in the door to become a LEO? I turned down a dispatching job and started off in a jail before i got certified. Good luck and keep us posted.

i just wat to get my foot in the door..when my motorcycles where stolen from my backyard a detective told me thats a good way to get known becoming a dispatcher

You know the difference between a job and a duty? A job you can refuse to do because it's dangerous; a duty you must do even if it is dangerous.

You see, not all dispatchers are milk and honey on the radio, so when we get a particularly nasty one, who is not just having a hectic day mind you, and is just being plain mean, we take our car mike, key it up and then run it over our badge a few times very quickly. Since our dispatchers use headsets, it sends a very unpleasant and unmistakeable message to either go take a break and get it together or put someone on who can.
Doesn't happen often but it does happen.
And the mike squeal works as well.
