Yes when I was taught this in recruit training we were told it was NATO Code.
Anyway it is in use in all Australian police agencies.
Nothing to say - taking the Fifth.
When I was running a USN police department, I insisted that my troops used the military phonetic alphabet. Some wanted to use a civilian one, some wanted to use their own, but we were a military unit, so we used the military alphabet.
About the best example of why became apparent when a patrol man with an aviation background used "Helo" for "H".........and the military "K" is "Kilo".
Now, it may have just been a limited situation and may not have been thier phonetic alphabet at all, but I was looking at a book on the battleship Bismark, they referred to the four turrets as Anton, Bruno, Caesar, and Dora. Possibilities.

("Shouts, Shouts, Report your position, the world wonders!"--Halsey receives this message and is furious at being treated like a little boy, not realizing that only the middle is the main message and the junk at either end is transmission confusion filler to confuse the enemy. (w,stte), from history)
Just make sure you use the right one so that your dispatchers or commanding officers don't have a talk with you.

Yeah, I had a small problem with mixing up the phonetics at first, being in the Guard and then transitioning to police work. It only took a couple of laughs over the radio and the dispatcher asking me to 10-9 my transmission to get it straight.Originally Posted by Moose63845

I like new officers that try to use the phonetic but they haven't quite learned.........
814 traffic (sounding all official)
814 go ahead

Diddlehopper................. Francine.................877
Usual cop humor is followed...........
Cracks me up.

On a related note:
when I make maintainance calls on our equipment, I believe that the calls are now outsourced to another country. I use the military alphabet and haven't run into any problems when I do.......though they may read back the data with another alphabet.
