    Bunch of scaredy cat wooses!

Although I can recall the one time in my life that I was scared...

    I disagreed with my wife......

Hey man, please don't rank on my gender. It seems to be yours that is having the problem. And I wouldn't even call it that; a problem. I like how whenever a man does something not manly, they get roped into our gender. Suck it up. We don't want or need the stereotype anymore.

I think the ability to handle situations is learned and more than that, not just learned by being a cop. There are other situations where one might learn to identify what is important in an emergency.

For example, during my pilot training, one would experience drills on engine failure and one learned to focus on the most important thing. It wasn't restarting the engine or getting on radio to call for help or looking for a place to land or such, but it was flying the airplane.

Back in the Navy, we went thru dropped weapon (ie, a missile) drills and the instructor would turn to us, the second one in charge. "You have a job, too! Your boss may be all shattered over this disaster and it is your job to get them back on track such asking them, "Aren't you suppose to do something now? Aren't you suppose to be calling someone now?"". And for me, that kind of training carries over to me in the panic situation when the voice comes on and asks, what are you suppose to be doing?

In some of my panic situations, I revert over into the intel officer, the observer, the spy, where the voice is saying, "Your bosses are going to want to know what happened out here. IT IS YOUR JOB to come back with a report so they do know."........and I start collecting information.

In others, it is to identify what is necessary and ensure things are done so what is necessary can be accomplished. My mother needed an ambulance and I reverted. I called 911, identify the reason why I need this emergency line, and went into providing the needed information. Once the ambulance was dispatched, I then went to work providing a clear path from the front door to my mother by locking up pets, moving furniture.

Part of this comes from how I see any mission. A mission has three components: offense, defense, support. Almost any job can be seen in this matter. Offense is what the goal is. Defense is disabling those things that can stop the goal from being accomplished. Support is assistance to goal accomplishment.

Mission mom: offense: get 911 response to mom. support: provide a clear path, a working area for the ambulance crew. defense: lock up the pets who might innocently attack the responders.

A lot of dealing and overcoming, for me, does come from the various motivations that those in the past, real or fictional, have used to build and support my job as an officer. Ie, an officer is someone you can put somewhere to take charge of a situation. I may not have been the best officer in the USN but I was put in a lot of places because they knew I could stand on my own two feet, handle the situation, and stabilize it. Or from fiction: "Come on, Ripley! That's why we are on this bigger machine in the first place. It becomes our problem when the machines can't handle it!"--Captain Dallas, book Alien.

There may be various sources for it, but essentially, it is something you learn how to do.
