You can't get knifed through a door, you can't get knifed at 50 ft .
YOu can get shot through a door, from 100 yds (+).
I'll stick with a ballistic vest anyday.

Ouch, if thru the door, that's hurt. Even the door can scream, "screeouch" :D So much powers in any firearms/rifles than just funny knives. <sigh> Even the bows are the same as knives. Are ballistic vests lighter than other vests?

You can get bullet/stab combo vests..... In the last 10 years I've had one guy attack me with a hatchet. I've never run into someone that wanted to stab me..... I've run into a whole lotta guns and luck of the Irish has prevented me from taking one.
Whoa! The luck of Irish is still with ya. You're lucky fella.

Get a threat level IIIA if you can afford it, be sure to wear your duty belt and uniform when you get fitted for it. My department issues the Safariland Zero G right now, and it is a good vest, except the carrier (outside cover) wears out quickly and the velcro is sucky. It is true that there were two known failures of vests containing the Zylon(one fatal), I would not hesitate to purchase a vest containing that fiber. I recommend you go to the Second Chance and the Armorholdings websites, and read up on the NIJ test protocols for the various vests to get a better understanding of what each threat level vest is designed to withstand, and then purchase the best you can afford.
"It's snowing still," said Eeyore gloomily. "So it is." "And freezing." "Is it?" "Yes," said Eeyore. "However," he said, brightening up a little, "we haven't had an earthquake lately."
