My husband has a wrecker truck and we heard that the rotating amber lights are illegal to use in Michigan, is this true?

it's illegal to drive down the road with the light on unless he is towing a oversized vehicle. Tow trucks in Michigan are now considered Emergency Vehicles when stopped on the freeway hooking up a vehicle. Slow Down Move Over applies to them.
Although it isn't written into law yet a tow vehicle (wrecker) can show red light to the rear but not to the front. The light bar has to be amber to the front and can have a red filter showing to the rear. No clear rotating light is allowed anymore. They are in process of amending this to the law as we speak. But currently it is ok.
he uses them when he is plowing snow and towing cars

Towing cars: You may operate amber at the scene of assistance, be it whatever is needed. You may operate the amber when in tow with an oversized vehicle or object. Remember, you MUST have tow lights on the rear of the vehicle you are towing. If you don't have tow lights the hazzards must be operating on the vehicle you are towing.
