question about getting hired

i found out that i am getting out of the coast guard in nov of 02. is it possible to get hired before i get out? do any departments do that? i know alot of my applications require a copy of my dd 214 but what if i dont have that yet. i know some people might say you have to wait but there must be some way to do this. im trying to avoid having to apply when i get out because that would mean i would have to get crap job for a couple of months when i get out. im trying to jump directly from military to police officer is this possible? any advice???

you can't jump from military into being a police officer just like that, first you have to attend a police academy and then be hired by a police force. You will need your dd form 214. Everyone thinks its just like the military police but there are different standards a civilian police force uses, such as education, physical prowness, ect. good luck in your search.

i know i wouldnt just jump right in, i was talking about the departments that have their own academy or sponsor people to go to the academy. is there anything i can do besides taking the b.a.t and the t.a.b.e test while im in the military. i guess im trying to have as little down time as possible when i get out.

Why don't you take separation leave? Then you would have a copy of your DD-214 to give to the department. Thats what I did with INS. Took 60 days (the max) sep leave, was hired and started one week after my actual EAOS.

thats a good idea i only will have 20 days by nov. im trying to work it out like you did and have a police position to go to or at least their academy when i get out. when would you suggest to put in for leave?? i now it will take more than 20 days to get hird somewhere. since im getting out on a hardship discharge ( for my wife) will i still be able to get seperation leave or will i have to use what i aquire??

coastie, try some of of federal law enforcement agencies, most attend the same academy. Some of the larger forces have their own academy, but as you said the process is slow due to back ground investigation as so on. hang in there and join your local sherrifs posse or volunteer to do some paperwork or filing for the state police, try anything to get you closer to the goal you want to achieve. good luck
