    Future Cop

I am in the Navy, and have a couple questions. First off, I know my military experience will give me more of a chance to get hired, but preparing for the tests and boards do you reccomend going to college also? I also have seen various books on test taking and oral board help for purchase, do you reccomend those? If there are any other reccomendations that I can do to be a cop please share, this is all I want to do with my life and i'm looking forward to it! Thanks in advance for answering!

-- Yes, having the military experience can give you an edge depedning on the department BUT it doesn't guarentee you'll be hired.

-- Going to college will certainly be a plus. Even though there are a significant number of departments who may only require a HS diploma or GED, college credit hours and/or having a degree can help a lot. Remember, again depending upon the department you apply with, it can be a very competitive process.

-- You are correct, there are a variety of "self-help" books one can buy at a book store or check out from a library. Off the top of my head, CLIFF'S and ARCO come to mind. I have heard some say the books don't help much and I have had others say these types of books do help. It's up to you though to determine whether or not you want to buy the books. In my opinion, I think a serious candidate should try and take advantage of any and all resources you can get your hands on. Again, DEPENDING UPON THE DEPARTMENT, it can be a very competitive process.

-- Finally, I'd check with the department or departments you have interest in to determine if they have any suggestions. Some departments do offer study guide materials.

I agree. Most departments require so many college credits for you to get in. Technical college would be good enough. Here in Wisconsin, you need 60 credits to become and Officer, and you get just over 70 from Technical college. The plus side with Technical College is that you get the same education in half the time. They also help negotiate your schedule, so if you currently have a job, you can work and go to school at the same time and still finish in the two years.

I suggest a little research. Like Charlie said, ask around at some of the PDs you might be interested in, or any for that matter just to get an idea of what is required.

    Good luck to you!
