    20 year old speeding ticket

While moving to our new home, came across a letter from virginia DMV saying my privilerages have been suspended in their state. I then remember I got a speeding ticket from virginia (I now live in Alaska) approx 20 years ago. How do i pay this ticket? Is it going to have interest?

Is there an address, phone number, name of a person on the letter? Maybe that would be a good place to start.

It is possible that you are still suspended. And if you are suspended in ANY state, we consider you to be suspended even if you have a current license.

I suggest going to the Virginia DMVweb site and get a phone number to call someone and find out if you are still suspended. You may have to pay a fine or an administrative restoration fee.

I would not let this go.

You are considered a fugitive from justice, SWAT should be at your door any minute now to verify the 'wanted' poster!
Seriously though, you should handle it as soon as possible through the dept that issued it, maybe inquire (if nothing else) if they have an ticket amnesty program & when that date/dates are. Given the length of time ago this took place, I would hedge any fines could be a very stiff one by now unless there is a cap, I am surprised you have a valid current license from your current state if your suspended in another so long ago...anyone know how this can happen?
    Good Luck on this! Recondo

I don't believe Alaska is a reciprocal state to VA. If you have no intentions on going back, why sweat it. But then again, if you have a conscious, like most decent people do.........

I don't believe any state charges interest (for traffic fines). Only one way to find out though. Also, remember, you'll have to check with the Jurisdiction's Court for any fines, and then probably pay VA DMV for a reinstatement of your priviledge.

Up in my area, there are (or at least were) additional fines that can be applied, if the original fee is not paid on time. I dont think it is 'interest' but more like fee's & fines tacked on, and I assume there would be a cap on the accumulation of such additional fees. I know this certainly applies to parking tickets, a guy recently was on the 5:00 news for having emassed $8000. +/- in unpaid parking tickets going back some number of years before someone finally nailed him down on it.
I am just wondering how you can obtain another valid DL (or even renewal) in another state when the one your turning in, is suspended or revoked..puzzling!

Even if he has no intentions of going back to VA, he may find himself in a state that IS reciprocal with Virginia at some point. Or, DC Law has said that as a Fed, if he runs into someone who is suspended in ANY state, he can treat them as suspended.

Why worry? In Alaska you can get up to 9 licenses, even if your drivers license is suspended in another state. Click here for Alaska DMV

I didn't take the time to read this link, but lets say he gets caught driving in Kansas, and my dispatcher see's his suspended in Alaska. Just because Alaska may allow it, does not mean Kansas will. In Kansas, if you possess a valid license, but have another that is supsended, your valid license you currently possess is now void and considered suspended.

Wish NC was like that. You have to be suspended in the State of NC for the DWLR charge. If you have a valid out of state OLN, but are not suspended in NC, you are valid, unless you have established NC residence, then you are NOL.

I thought most states were like this,ie: invalid in one, is no good in the others if you could even get one in the 1st place..sounds like a break in the system that allows the opposite, jeez!

The break in the system occurs only if you are a non-resident.

Maybe you should contact the court that issued the order to suspend your license and ask them to set a trial date that is convenient for you and the officer who issued the ticket. What are the chances this issuing officer is still On the job?
