What school is a good school to learn about law enforcement?

Ill be a Sr. in Highschool next year and i want to be a cop. Later on i want to try and work for the FBI or CIA but i think you have to be 23...so what do i have to do to become a cop? Is college required? I know it is for FBI/CIA. What courses do you recomend? I just want to have a better idea of what im gonna have to do.

    Thanks for your time.

Im not sure where you are located but many 4 year schools have criminal justice/ law enforcement studies as a major. If your by NY there is a good college, John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan that I went to/going back to. Also for FBI and CIA they look a lot for people with majors in science, politics, forein languages. You may want to look into those if CIA and FBI are your goal. If you are planning to stay in a regular police department any college experience is good but you may want to take some criminal justice classes to become more familiar with everything related to police work.

Most importantly Major in something that your intersted in, if it intrests you, chances are you will do well in it. But also try and find something that you can use out side of LE, incase you can't be a LEO for some reason. Out side of LE, a CJ degree is useless from what ive heard. I plan to major in Business, with possible a minor in CJ. The Business degree helps if you want to climb the chain of command(from what ive heard)

John Jay is good but has no dorms so you will need to find a place to live ans support yourself. I myself have a BA in crim justice. Am I happy I got that? Sure. What does that do for me now? Nothing other than it got me hired. A lots of feds are hiring...butteh majors they like are accounting (forensic accountingis big now), computer science, law and special languages. Don't get me wrong....a degree is great. But do something you would be interested in.....not just law enforcement. If you do 20 and leave...you need a new job and a crim just degree doesn't do much for options. I went with something totally different for my masters. A co-worker just finished a technical college aircraft mechanics course. No more patrol for him. He put in for aviation and got it. Now he goes to Bell (helicopter) for formal dealer training for 8 weeks and then he has the life...a nice M-F schedule with decent hours, holidays off and he gets the same pay I get as I do 20 radio runs a day! Another gal here retired with 3/4 last week due to an on the job injury. She is 32...but is using her computer degree and making triple what she made here + her pension! Just think ahead!

you can do more with a BS or BA in Cj then these guys are giving credit for. Just widen the blinders, you don't have to only use a CJ degree in the law field.

A CJ degree will help you with any job that just requires a 4 year degree. I see nothing more, though.

As Dan said, study what you like. If it's CJ, that is great. If not, so what!

BTW, FBI is recruiting very heavily in the fields of the hard sciences (Bio, Chemistry, Engineering, etc).

I'm not going to try to compare this to hard sciences and what you can do with those, but depending on what type of concentration you did with the degree it is quite varried what you can do in the states and even out of them.

Law enforcement is really the only one people look at.

    Protective agencies
    physical security agencies
    pre-law
international security (I'm not ****ing you I've had propsitions from people in Panama & guatemala to help them start/run/manage security companies and I'm not even a graduate yet)
    management
    administration
    social sciences/politics
    parole
    probation
    bounty hunting

yeah it mainly goes into 'service' type industries but 'law and order' can be related to many fields.
