I am going to be starting the police academy in a few months and I was wondering which handgun you experienced officers would suggest. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

What does your department issue? Or what does the prospective department issue?
Have you shot any handguns? Try to go somewhere that allows you to try their handguns out. Alternatively, do you know anyonw that shoots who would let you test drive their gun?
I'd say that you could not gowrong with a Glock, Sig, HK, or even the Springfield XD. Whatever you find most comfortable.
I, personally, like the tried and trued reliability and simplicity of a Glock.

I've always liked glock weapons.
amazingly enough, I'm getting quite proficient with the 'kung fu' berreta takedown ;)

I can only add to what switchback has already suggested. I'd suggest that you find out what area department's issue and make you selection from one of those models. As already suggested, possibly going with a GLOCK might be worth spending the money as a lot of agencies either issue or allow officers to carry this particular weapon. BUT, on the other hand, some agencies may not and will issue the gun they say you must carry on duty. At any rate, I might be very competent with a GLOCK but you might be better off with say, for example, a SIG. One size does not satisfy all unless you don't have a choice in the matter.
If you have the flexibiity to try out several handguns, do this. But stay with the major reputable, quality made firearms such as (but not necessarily limited to): Glock, S&W, SIG, Beretta, etc. I think in most cases if you purchase one of these weapons brand new, you'll be fine.

Congrats Future! What agency?
The guys working at the range love practicing that. You can get pretty quick with it.amazingly enough, I'm getting quite proficient with the 'kung fu' berreta takedown
But no one will try it on me while I hold my LOADED Beretta. :p

Remember those who died, remember those who killed them.
my academy class was full of rugers. i used a ruger P90 for most of it. no one wanted to spend a lot of money on a gun since most agencies supply them. and as far as value and reliability, you can't beat a ruger.
the best shot of the entire class used a 686.
(1) Go the Glock - Perfection.
Obviously check the approved weapon for your department (and hope that they use Glocks).
(2) Did I mention that a Glock would be good?

I read a review by this guy, bought a muzzleloader on his recomendation, and found that he hit the nail on the head with a lot of things. He has a handgun review section too, but I did not look into that. I have nothing to do with this site other than the fact that I read a few reviews, and found it on google. Might be worth checking out:

I'll stick by the handgun designed by an American, seen more combat action than any other American handgun...the 1911(mine 100% American every bit of it..A Les Baer SRP). All you Glock lovers just keep on propping up foreign companies and foreign products, you might as well carry a friggin Nambu.
right, well in this world it's function over form. You want a historic firearm's company, buy something from Berreta. Besides who else is going to support the Glock factory here in GA, criminals?

I have heard rumors that a GLOCK might jam up on you in the line of fire. Has this been confirmed and if this is true can or does this happen to other handguns?
I'll keep my Glock. I have had 3 different Glock's as duty weapons since 1990 and have yet to have any problems. Currently , I have a .40 model and it is a nice duty weapon.
