    Hi,

You can't use a revolver with NYPD anymore to my knowledge. The one's that have them are older officers that were grandfatherd into the old weapon's cadre. ANY NYPD officer care to comment.

If youjoin NYPD, you have very little choice in your weapons....on or off duty. All weapons are 9mm semi-automatic. If you "suck" on them....meaning you do not qualify in training....you are FIRED. If you fail to requal every year.....you go to desk duty without your gun.

On duty choices: Glock 19, S&W5946, Sig 226
    Off-Duty choices: Glock 26, Kahr K9, S&W 3953TSW, S&W 3914DAO & Beretta 8000D

Modifications: None allowed. You are not allowed to make ANY modifications to your weapon. NONE! It is periodically inspected and if you make any changes, you will have it taken away till they return it to "normal" and you will be formally disciplined. And if you use your weapon....and it was modified in any way...they city and department will not indemnify you as it is clearly violates your written orders. So the shoot may be good and NY Penal Law Use of Force clears the shoot...but NYPD will not and you are now facing formal departmental charges. If sued in civil court over this matter you will be on your own for the same reason.

Ankle Holster: None of the NYPD authorized guns are easily concealed or comfortable on an ankle holster. It is also hard to reach. If you are getting mugged and a guy wants your wallet.....how are you going to get to it? But my IWB holster in the back...I pretend I am grabbing my wallet and out comes my gun and....GAME ON! Most NYPD guys use fanny packs, pancake holsters or in the waist holsters.

    Yeah,
The only guy I know with a revolver in the NYPD in an ankle holster is the Commissioner himself. I read this a quite a few different articles. But he has bodyguards anyway, so he probably only has one has a "just in case" type of thing. I got a small tour of ONE POLICE PLAZA, some of the guards there had revolvers, but they looked to be in the mid-30's to 40's, so they probably kept them. The grips were black though, instead of the classic "brown/wooden" grips of the old model 10's. WOnder why?

The Commish is required to carry one of the weapons that were offered when he went through the academy...and if he never attended the academy...they have to carry what the current officers have. Accordingto teh department rules: if they have prior LE experience, they can carry a weapon that they trained on after they provided a written request to the Firearams & Tactis Unit who must physically inspect the weapon ad qualify them to shoot.

    Hey,
I e-mailed Commissioner Kelly, and since he answered my questions (through another person) and since he isn't an official "Sworn-in uniformed" member of the NYPD and he is more of a political position, he can but isn't required to carry. And it said taht since he is more a political position, than he can carry what he wants to. And judging from the many articles, he carries a .38 snubbie in an ankle holster. I guess from the email and letter I got, that the Chief is actually the highest Uniformed "Official sworn in memeber" of the department. Its kinda weird sicne he isn't really the leader of the department. The NYPD are the coolest Police department in the world IMO! I want to be commissioner someday

He also went on to say the he doesn't normally carry a gun on hsi belt but SOMETIMES does. So judging from what you have told me, he probably carries a .38 model 10 (what he trained with, Im guessing since it was back in the day) and than ALL THE TIME a .38 snub in ankle holster. But nowadays he normally doesn't need/Want to carry a MAIN gun on his belt. I have recieved a few emails from his secretary/typer dude.
