Are they regular crown victorias or do they have engine mods?
Is there a reason why crown victoria's are used in many departments?

If I remember right back in the late 80's Dodge and chevrolet stopped making police cars. Ford is the only American company still making them. Funny thing is I don't recall them making them back when Dodge was. We used to get the same car the CHP had. I don't know what if any modifications they had.
How come your house has wheels and your car doesn't?
they're police interceptors, they just have spot lights, heavier duty tranny and suspension etc. etc.
I know the 96ish caprices had the corvette engine in them, those were pretty fast.

I remember hearing the caprices in the late 80's also had the Corvette engine. I did not know they made them again in 96. We only had the Crown Vics from 92 until now. In the early 90's we phased out the Diplomats & Caprices.

yeah Its like 93-96 or 94-96 caprices came with a police package with the LT1.
I belive there is modifications to the engine, but do not quote me.

Police Package CV's have the High Output engine and heavy duty cooling and suspension. All are options available to the general public if you know which boxes to check.
Crown Vics are used because they are real wheel drive, which is a much more durable platform for the rigors of police work, and they are generally more roomy for all of the equipment and cargo (read prisoners) carried by police.
In the decades prior to the 90's, there were Chrysler, Ford and General Motors Police Packages. As GM and Chrylser eliminated the rear wheel drive cars, the choices available to PD's was limited.

UGH! THis is a sensitive subject for me....don't get me started on the Ford Police IMPERSONATOR (interceptor). See my webpage for how I feel about them. Ford has done NOTHING to improve this car. They are slow and weak. But anyway......
NOTHING compaires to the old 96 caprice. NOTHING ever will. Why? Because ford has no other competition out there. They don't have to do better.

I'm not aware of any engine modifications for higher output. I thought it was all just heavier duty stuff plus police-oriented accessories like stab plates, rear door handle disable, heavy duty electrical & cooling and prewired for lightbar etc.
The police package Taurus pre-96 had a revised chip and dual exhaust.
I remember the K-cars for patrol cars. Now that was interesting lol
You guys are always helpful.
dunno, back in Tx...the Higway patroll used Camaros and F-150's, and the local sherrifs office had malibus
One thing I didn't see mentioned is the modified shift points and the higher top speed. Off the lot CV are limited to the mid 90's in speed.

THe 94, 95 and 96 Caprice's had the LT-1 350 engine. A real screamer for a big sedan.
The 4.6 CV has a high output engine thanks to the dual exhaust . All else is just heavy duty stuff.
Dodge got out of the police car businessback in 1989 with the Gran Fury. We had some 318 models and they were dogs.
Of course they are back with the Intrepid and perhaps the Magnum ?
We have 2 of the FWD Impalas with the 3.8 200 hp V-6 but put a cage in them and they are too small for us. We use them as supervisor cars. One is unmarked and is a REAL sleeper. I can't tell how many times I have been passed , tailgated etc by people who didn't know who I was. Suprise !
