Just long enough to feel she can testify with confidence as to the speed. It's possible that when she hit 90 you were still pulling away from her, so she makes the stop and writes you for 90. That's the easiest way to clock without having to try to match speed for a specific distance. It's also the best case scenario for the officer if you fight the ticket. If you claim in court that she didn't pace you for a long enough distance so the 90MPH can't be accurate, she'll testify that at 90 you were still pulling away, but for the safety of others on the road she decided to put a stop to your high speed adventure. So now the judge will think that here's this Bozo who was probably pushing the 100MPH envelope and he's in my courtroom bitching because he was written for only 90.
The question is interesting though. I wonder if any jurisdictions, departments,
prosecutors, or courts have set "pace distance standards", and if so how they came up with them.
