My dad just gave me the bag and told me to put stuff in it.
How much is all the gauze going to cost...and the triangle dealy? Got an estimate?

In NY we are trained never to use a torniquet for any reason. As you mentioned, tissue damage . . . Even in the event a limb is lost we are not to use a torniquet as the bleeding supposedly stops on its own. The capillaries constrict on their own. For applying pressure, I would feel more comfortable using roll gauze. Just my humble opinion, but using a bp cuff as you describe worries me. For anyone reading (this is not directed at DeputyMadMax specifically) I would never reccomend doing anything beyond the scope of your training, or pulling a McGyver because you not only put the patient at risk, but you open yourself, your dept., medical control, etc. open to liability.Originally Posted by DeputyMadMax
What do you use that for? Not a seizure, right?Originally Posted by 99TAC
Recent studies have shown that the fears of tourniquet usage have been greatly exaggerated. The key is in using a tourniquet of proper width. Nerve/tissue damage often results from using a tourniquet device that is too narrow.
I would also agree in the statement that you should not perform beyond your training.

Yes it is supposed to be for seizures to prevent the patient from biting off his/her tongue of breaking their teeth when they clench down, however, we are no longer instructed to place anything in a seizure patient's mouth so it's no longer recommended for use..Originally Posted by md123

But check Part 800 in NYS - last I saw, they still required 2 bite blocks as part of the minimum equipment on every certified ambulance in the state. Just hasn't caught up yet ;)Originally Posted by 99TAC
amonium inhalant's are good. Used one of those on the 4th.
Don't forget the normal stuff, bandaids, etc., anything a citizen may ask for.
Tweezers and a needle for splinters
Ice pack
Bio hazard kit, gloves, mask, eye protection, gown, bio bags.

Oh yeah, I know, we have several items on our ambulance that are only there because the Dept. of Heath says that they are mandatory on an ambulance, however, we no longer use them. It takes the state a while to adapt to revised protocols sometime.Originally Posted by paramoron
