That sounds like a good, patriotic answer on the surface, but I can't tell you how many arrests I make of people who think I'm just asking for permission to search (usually their car) as a formality, and if they say no I'm going to anyway. I've had people tell me no before, and that's fine. I usually end it with, "have a nice day". But 98% of the people you ask will let you...even more so if they have something to hide.
Now, I'm not saying I ask everyone I stop permission to search their car...maybe 3-5%. And I have to be able to articulate WHY I wanted to search it in the first place. But if everyone just said no you wouldn't see all those pretty pictures of huge interstate drug busts on the front page of the news paper.
Anyway, not giving you a hard time...just explaining my point of view and trying to show you a little bit about how things get done.
