    Maryland State Police

Ok, I'll be 19 in sept, so i still have a good year at least to wait, but here is my question. I've talked to a few people and they were mentioned that me being a single white male that I might not have any chance of getting into the academy even if I pass all of the eligability requirements and everything else? any truth to this?

How can that be? Do they give points to minorites/women? If your background is clean and you are truthful they can't deny you because your single or white or black or whatever.

I am just asking this question based on what I have been told my actual State Police. I mean even on job applications for state and county here in maryland it says "Women and minorities encouraged to apply". I'm just trying to get some things straight.

Women and minorities being encouraged to apply isn't the same as "cause you're white we aren't going to hire you" that's illegal. If you score well on your tests and score high in your other aspects you should have just as much of a shot as anyone else regardless of backgrounds, ethniticity, gender, etc...

getting in depends on a multitude of things.

first, you will be ranked as "best", "better", "fair", and "non" in regards to how competitive you are in the applicant pool.

second, there has to be funding for another trooper class.

third, say there's 75 "best" qualified people, but only funding for a class of 50, guess what? 25 supposedly very good candidates get shafted.

in your case, you obviously should apply for cadet right now since you're not close to being 21. but if you want to wait, just know that many of the applicants are coming in with prior LE or military experience, which could make it very tough for a young, inexperienced person to get in.

EDIT: and another thing, about a year or so ago, the MD state police settled a suit having to do with them using racial profiling while stopping vehicles....
