    Protective order//Restraining order...?

What does a protective order or restraining order do exactly? Most people say it's just a piece of paper. Is there a way to get a protective order if the person who wants it is just fearful of someone because of past events. Past events being of a sexual nature which put the person in jail even though it was only founded as breaking parole. The person had been in jail 9 years prior to that and was supposed to be in another 3 but got out for good behavior. The reason he was in jail was because he molested his own niece and nephew. He's getting out soon and it's just a scary thing. I want to know if it's possible to get a protective order or restraining order on him. And if I can do that...what does the protective order or restraining order usually entail?

It vaires by state but usually it either restricts or limits contact between 2 parties. It may have exclusions or stipulations such as no 3rd party contact, no phone contact, no letters, no contact within fo many feet.... In NY it is a case by case basis fo rteh exclusions. I would call teh District Attorney who handled teh case and ak what your options are. They would be able to direct you better in your states.

They are both just pieces of paper in regards to actually physically stopping someone from getting at you, however, they both allow for extra stuff to happen after the violation occurs. In Texas protective orders allow police to arrest while restraining orders are just for civil courts.
