    Laws On Carrying A Knife

I am a police explorer in my town. While doing my ride-alongs a carry a 3 inch folding knife with me, incase there is an accident and I need to be able to cut a seat belt and various other things. I do not carry my knife with me while off of duty, but I was wondering what the laws were on carrying a 3 inch folding knife out in public not with having the intent to harm anyone. Now do not get me wrong I am not talking about in air ports, schools, or places such as these. What I am talking about is to like a store, a mall, movie theatre, and other places like that, is that aloud??

If you are carrying a knife on a ride along, did you clear it with the officer ?

You would NOT carry ANY such item if riding with me.

Beyond that, it depends on your state/local laws. I would say that in most cases a small folding "pocket" knife is not a problem.

In accourdance to our post's rules and regulations were are aloud to carry pocket knives as long as they are no longer than 3 inches and that they fold. The majority of the officers that I have rode with carry them themselves, and I have even been asked by an officer if I had one that way he could use it as a window wedge, which he was happy that I had been carrying mine. So far no one has had a problem with it, but of coarse if someone would, than I would not carry one with me. I do see the risks that are involved in having one, but as I had stated earlyer our rules and regulations allows us to have one, and no one has had a problem with that so far.
