    the interview

here's the deal.. i received a phone call today from a sheriffs department that i applied at. they said they want me to fly down for the interview and if all goes well, i take a small exam (which i'm not all that worried about) and then if all goes well with that, i take a drug test.
now, the question is... what is going to happen at the interview? not only that but, how should i dress? i've obviously had interviews at other jobs but this is a little more important than the others. i don't want to go over dressed and i definately don't want to go under dressed. Maybe i'm sweating too much but i really want this job. i don't want to mess up at all.
any information and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks and have a good day to all.

Dress like you would going to any other professional interview (slacks, no skirt)...Make sure all of your clothes are neatly pressed, and that you get plenty of rest the night before. Avoid coffee or drinking immediately before the interview, as you don't want to be jittery, or have to go to the restroom during the interview. Present yourself professionally, and you will be treated professionally.

As for the interview itself, don't sweat it... Be forthcoming and truthful, and you'll do just fine. Practice your responses to the "typical" interview questions, and have answers ready when they ask you "Why this department", "Why should I hire you instead of one of the others", and questions of that nature. Have questions for them also.... When they ask you if you have questions for them, DON'T SAY NO!!

Map out how to get to the interview location BEFORE the morning you have to be there, and for God's sake... BE ON TIME!!

Why is it frowned upon to wear a skirt?

Jynxxie, YOU can wear a skirt! ;)

I say no skirt because it gives the impression that you're "too" girly, and that you might belong behind a desk taking phone calls instead of on the street. That goes for guys too, no skirts!

Nah, long skirts are professional dress.

Oh I thought all that hoopla went out the window years ago...but I see your point. It is just that most of my work suits are skirt suits.

Yeah, I would have to agree. Having sat on numerous oral boards over the years I think slacks for women at entry level boards are a better choice. Why? Who knows, it is what it is.

If you do wear a skirt keep it tasteful.......no super minni's...though you may catch some eyes it may hurt you long run. When I used to do interviews the senior memebers always gave more credit to those in pant suits .....I used to ask why...they told me how they dress now is how they dress when they are cops and how is she going to run if something happens in heals and a skirt? I am not sure I agree butthey were fixed on pant-suits and non-heel shoes! Good luck......you will do well!

Dress like you want to impress them with a professional appearance, because you do.

Answer the questions in a calm manner, being truthful and yet sincere. They will detect what kind of person that you are.

Although we always second guess ourselves after an interview, leave knowing that you put your best foot forward.
