I'm thinking about applying to L.A.P.D. but I live in Pa.

I'm willing to do just about anything to get the ball rolling.

What are some things to consider when applying to a job 2000 miles away? Is it possible for the department to set up a special schedule to administer all the tests for one week? Did anyone else apply to a department that was far away from you? How was your experience?

I'd appreciate all of your responses.

I can tell you what the OCPD (oklahoma city PD) says about this. Just let them know before hand that you are from out of state, and they will arrange special accomadations for you to show up for oral interviews, polygraphs etc... all within a short amount of time so you don't have to make multiple trips out there.

That's what they do here so I'm assuming they would make similar arrangements out there. Call the recruiter and talk to him/her and they should be able to help you get the ball rolling.

    Hi,

If you go to joinlapd.com it will explain their expedited process. With the exception of the entrance exam, you can complete the remainder of the processing in one week.

    Good luck

Curious, have you ever been to California ?

If not. it isn't exactly like TV. CA is one state that I enjoyed visiting but I don't think I would want to live there. Yosemite is my fav National Park.

How about earthquakes, pollution, water rationing, gangs, traffic, self-absorbed people...Shall I go on?

All of California is not like that. Grant it that traffic does make life hell unless you drive on the freeway between 1-4 AM.

I am just curious what got your interest in the LAPD ? TV shows or ?? It is a HUGE leap to move to apply for a job on the other side of the country much less move there. The cost of living in the LA area is QUITE high compared to most of PA. Houses are extremely high priced. Mkae sure you investigate ALL of the angles before taking such a quantum leap.

Why not get a LA newspaper or look at it on line to see how life is out there ?

Grew up In Cali myself, (East Side San Fernando Valley homey!!) joined the mass fire exit back in the mid 90's when I was old enough to do so on my own, I hated the place, still do, yes - not all of the state is like that, the south is worse, the north is nicer, but only if you can afford it to be & the small outskirt towns & cities can be a real eye opener in a variety of ways. LAPD is a BIG dept in a big bad city..might want to take a trip out there 1st before you jump right in so far from home..it can be a different world to some, others find it the greatest place on earth.. Good Luck eitherway. Recondo

I live in LA, and i love it. If you want to live and work in a city that has perfect weather, perfect women, and too many activities for one to do, then this is the place for you. LA is not for everyone, but if you dont mind diffrent cultures, diffrent people, and a lot of traffic then you will love LA too. I used to live in Vegas and was just bored stiff, i always felt like i was missing something, so i moved back. If you can make it here you can make it anywhere...and that is the truth...

Tacoma, WA...is it anything like Seattle? I was in Seattle for a weekend and loved it. It rained the whole time, but so what. I only can imagine how nice it would be during the summer...

I do have to say that I thought it was one of the most beautiful places on earth. Just that it has some earnest problems, that's all.

Working for a big department would be a thrill for me. The cost of living IS something I need to look at...but frankly, I want to move far away from my family and past life as I can. I want to start over and focus on the career.

    EDIT

Do you recommend some other departments that are far from Philadelphia?

Sure. PA State Police. Departments in and around Harrisburg, Lancaster, York ( where I am ) Not to mention farther west like Pittsburgh. The pay and bennies are pretty good in central PA. Scope out the Sunday paper from the Patriot News ( Harrisburg) or the York Sunday News ( York). That is where MOST of the LEO ads are not to mention the net. 911hotjobs etc.

You get too far away from civilization and the pay/bens drop off. ( Franklin /Bedford Counties etc.)
