Does shift work bother you as a cop?(not going out with friends ect...)

This is a major downfall for being a police officer IMO, what are your thoughts on this?

I mean it would totally suck to work on a friday night

I already work Fridays...no change. But i dont think they miss every fri. Shifts normally change, as do the days in which you work.

If you don't want to work friday nights then Law Enforcement isn't the career for you. You work the day and shift they tell you to work or find another job. There has to be a point in your life where going out and havign fun isn't something you absoutley have to do every week. You have to grow up and become an adult sometime. There is no work ethic in America anymore, everyoen says "I want all friday and Saturdays off Chief!"

When I was a cook working nights and weekends, and early mornings after a night shift it was hard on my social life. But that was when I was young and single. I imagine it wouldn't be so bad now. How old are you?

A 'real' police officer should/and would find as many ways a possible to have fun on a friday night when not out being 'social'. And besides, a 'real' cop loves his job so much that working a friday would be like working any other night. And the chances of there being more "excitement" on these nights more so then others is a real possibility anyway.
On student patrol, I work friday's (not all the time - from time to time though) and I like it so much that half the time I even forget what I 'might' be missing.

HERE HERE! I'd much rather be out messing with drunks than getting drunk

I recall an application we received in which the person couldn't work Sundays and Wednesdays because he was an assistant pastor !!

You will start at the bottomand work your way UP. Count on working weekends, that is part of the job. If you want holidays and weekends off , go work in a bank.

My days off ARE my weekends and I like it.

Shift work means a lot more money for people in the job here, it puts on about 20% - 25% (depending on the roster) once you factor in public holidays as well

We do not get a shift differential for ANY shift but do get triple time for holidays.

I have not had a M-F daaywork job with weekends off since I became a cop. And I wont until I retire.

I don't mind working Fridays nights as I have no friends to socialise with anyway.

    Thank your Unions....

We don't have Unions here, so needless to say, my hubby doesn't get a shift differential, and only gets paid straight time for working holidays....

You're absolutely right inquiring mind. Our Association was formed in 1911, if it weren't for them we would never have the conditions we enjoy today.

Here if I don't work a public holiday I get paid 8 hours, if I work it (depending on the shift) I get double or double and a half time. But given the tax rate it's not worth working the holiday for me (top tax rate 47c in the $).

Damn, I can't wait to work shift work. Think of the variety of calls, the different people...I just think the atmospheres of working different shifts is exciting. One of the things that draws me in.
