Transportation of firearms over state lines

I was planning on bringing some guns with me to my fathers house in Rochester NY next weekend. He's been great with helping me out financially during school, and I figured letting him borrow my AR with a thousand rounds or so of ammo would be a nice gesture of appreciation.

My question is, is there any laws I should be aware of regarding the transportation of firearms from state to state? Specifically this would be from PA to NY. I would also like to bring a handgun for him to borrow as well, but I know NY gun laws are far more draconian than PA's, so I figured I'd chk in with the LEO's on the board to get some info.

I do have a CCW permit, but to my knowledge, NY has no reciprocal agreement with PA to make this valid in NY. I'm also fairly certain I can transport the rifle and ammo legally, so long as it's not loaded and stored in separate areas of the car.

Go to this site www.packing.org. It is very good, so good that the State AG here in WA refers inquiries to packing.org for CCW reciprocity. The NRA is another good source. BATF website has local law links too. Upstate NY and NYC are different worlds as rules pertains to firearms.

I believe you are correct but double check anyway. I use to go to Mass and kept my handgun locked in the trunk unloaded. I was going to the S&W for an IDPA match. As long as you are not carrying it on your person its ok.

Rifles/longuns might be different. I know a bunch of guys who take their AR's and FN's up to NY state to shoot on this guy's farm land for the day. So...

Best advice here, has been to double check with the LEA of the area your traveling to, but I would say your safe if your have them stored, unloaded in a seperate area of the vehicle (such as the trunk) Better still would be to have them stored in a LOCKED container or hard gun case, again unloaded & maybe leave the ammo at home & buy some when your at your location. This is the general FAA guidlines for transporting on an aircraft to another state & I doubt you could go wrong by similarly following thier policy. Having a permit may help you should you get pulled over & have all these weapons in the car, but nothing will help you if your carring unlawfully in a state that does not recognize your permit or if you drive in such a manner as to deserve getting stopped in the 1st place..Just play it safe & do the right thing in storing them & you will be fine. Thsi is coming from a NY cop:
    a) NY does not recognize permits from PA. Thus if you were in posession of any fire arm in NY and are a PA resident....you can be charged with Criminal Posession of A Weapon. If the AR is pre-ban.....it is a HUGE felony and they will push the issue.
    b) They will only know you have the weapon if you give them a reason to find it: lspeeding....road rage.....and other infractions. If you can drive teh speed limit with NO other violations you should make it there OK.
    c) Where were you going to shoot this? Most ranges in NY will have a range master who asks for the permit before you shoot. Depending how tight this person is with local law enforcement....they may or may not rat you out. Nothing like shooting it and finding a officer behind your back watching you fire it and thus gaining all teh eveidence he needs to win!
    d) If you do transport it....these are the rules:
    1) Each weapon must be unloaded.
    2) Each weapon must be placed in seperate case, which LOCKS! They are not talking about a latch....but a LOCK (Padlaock, comob lock, dial lock). You should also place a trigger lock on each weapon before you place it in teh locked container.
    3) Ammo must be kept in a separate sealed container (Sealed could be a box with tape). No rules on that.
    4) Cases must be kept apart from each other in thr trunk.
    5) Are you a Sworn LEO? If so you could get courtesy and travel without much hesitation under these standards.

I agree with Sgt. Packing.org is very good, however when I have traveled with my firearm I have called each of the State Agencies (for states I was traveling thru) and verified the laws with them as well as having them fax me something in writing. (I carry of course so it may not be as complex for you.) Usually it seems as long as you have it cased and ammo in a separate compartment of the car, away from the gun you are fine. I could be wrong.
