As a somewhat related point,
Our department recently got onboard the new state digital trunked system that is pretty much un-scannable. Man, people whined and complained that they couldn't hear what was going on anymore. And I personally thought it was just wonderful, splendid, and terrific. That's T double E double R double I double F double C,C,C. No more scanners! You can still hear any Fire and EMS pages, but you can't hear us! :D
Before, you always kind of had the sense that they knew you were coming before you responded.
What is the legitimate use? Just don't see it. *shrug *
just to let you know, if you're home and connected to the net, I don't know about oregon, but in ATL police/fire/emt/etc agencies make their own websites and put a scanner feed on them for people to listen to, some even have links to all their codes and such. www.scangwinnet.com www.scanfulton.com etc

cxt, those new digital frequencies are still based on radio and thus can be intercepted. If you want to be secure get some of the military's CRYPTO gear![]()

There are scanners for those, but I understand they are very costly.Originally Posted by CXT_180

Hmm,
I heard they were over $1,000. Perhaps they havegone down in price. As I understand it, they are suceptible to scanning, but every time you key up, it uses a different frequency/trunk code, so you might pick up us, then next time, you pick up a trooper on the other side of the state.
That is true, it changes frequencies. The system uses a computer to control that, and uses a sub-audible carrier to notify the radios where to change. The scanners just have to be programmed to react as the system radios do.Originally Posted by CXT_180

Yea anything that involves radio waves can be intercepted, many police agencies use encryption for major incidents or sometimes always transmit in encryption, people who are involved in radio know ways around these, they arent really that hard to figure out if u got some time, anyways
here is another thing to for you law enforcement officers too
do u guys think that the data/info on your MDTs is secure?
No its not, people actully can intercept that data/info and have it displayed on their computers at home/business/ or whereever, although I will say to get access to that, it is really hard for most people, I myself dont know how to do this as it is illegal and I do support officer safety, etc, iam just saying that it is highly possible and has been done, I guess i dunno why someone would want to see officers MDT data? see who he is running for wants/warrants? I dunno but again its just to let you guys know, that anything that involves radio frequencies is not secure, In the army our sincgars radios also have a option where it does frequency hopping, now something like that would be very difficult to monitor or try to listen in, most MDT software does use encryption iam sure, and ill bet motorola is leading this communication area too as they do with most communication equipment

some taxis compnays in big citys use encryption so that other taxis companys who might have a unit closer to a call cant pickup their customer and make the money for that run. so some companys dispatches where intercepting their competitors signals and dispatching their units to the calls
i dunoo if they still practice that or not as this info is a couple years old but still nonetheless
Thanks

again this is commercially availible to scan every non encrypted radio signal out there, less celular.
Now imagine the non commerically availible gear that can do CRYPTO, and cell freqencies.

Tx/CXT--It's called "trunk-tracking," and the RS Pro-96 and Uniden 296/796'll do it. $400-500ish, for either of those. You just need to put one control channel in, and the Pro-96 will find the other ones as they're used. Slick, eh?
Original Poster--Illegal in MN (in vehicle) without LE status, a permit from the BCA or a valid amateur radio license.
Justin--St. Paul having it's own rule on scanners? What would that be, I've never heard of that before...
In theory, there is no difference between practice and theory. In practice, there is.
True, per system.Originally Posted by HailStorm
