    Drivers on Cell Phones

Despite many states having passed laws regarding cell phone use while driving, it annoys me that I still see MANY people driving 70mph down the Southern State with one hand up to their ear. It's really become a pet peeve of mine, because all it takes is a second of distraction and SPLAT goes their car, them, and/or the people around them, one of whom happen to be me!

My question is, what can I do about it. Sometimes I want to just flash my lights at them and honk my horn, BUT I realize that 1) that's harrassment and more likely just to get them upset and 2) detracts from the only reason FOR using your horn -- to warn of impending danger (hmm then again... )

Are there any suggestions out there? I might want to become a state Trooper just to hunt them down but I'm waiting for the NYPD exam in June. Maybe some bumper stickers.... giant flashing neon signs... I'm really liking the roof-mounted rocket launcher idea but I don't think that would work... :D

It seems you are really concerned with safe driving. Thats good. Perhaps instead of peering into other vehicles, you could watch the road. After all, all it takes is a split second of distraction and SPLAT goes their car.

Are you also concerned with people eating while driving, disciplining children, reading maps, looking for CD's, cassettes, talking to the person in the seat next to them, reading books, newspapers, etc?

tx, it's not "peering into other vehicles" it's actually pretty easy to see the sillouette of somebody in the car in front you with their elbow sticking out to the side -- not really hard to figure out what they're doing. And looking in the rear-view mirror and see somebody tailgating you becuase they're blabbing away and not paying attention. I consider myself to be a very defensive, observant driver and lack the "tunnel vision" attitude that I'm the only person on the road.

add to your list chaging the radio station, doing their makeup, and smoking (I've been burned by a butt that was thrown out a window and was blown into my car). But they don't have laws against that yet.

Sure they do. Cause a wreck while doing any of those things and be charged with driver distraction.

As far as your other comments; pay attention to your own driving and don't worry about what others are doing in their cars. It is a distraction to YOUR safe driving.

A friend of mine was T-bone by a young woman several months ago. She hit hard enough that her air bags deployed. When he got out and walked up to her he asked, "Were you talking on the phone when you hit me?" She said she wasn't and he just laughed and told her to go look in a mirror.

He said you could almost make out the numbers from the buttons on the bruise on her cheek in the shape of a cell phone.

I really really hate people who talk on the cell phone while driving. In fact, every time I'm driving and I see one of those dopes I grab my cell phone and call the cops.

Group9 - That must be common - I've heard it a few times before.

Plus, she must have soft skin to be injured by a rubber button...

If I get hit by someone and I think they were talking onthe cellphone then can the police get a warrant for her cellhpone records to show the phone was in use at the time of the accident...?

Or if I sue, could I subpeano (sp?) them?

If I see someone driving recklessly I call the cops on them. Then follow them until the cops pull them over. Its a great feeling to see the look on their faces when they are getting pulled over. =) Plus its more effective then flicking them off.

    Supposedly, hands-free aint much better:

Also, TX, don't you think that your first post to this thread was a little harsh. I pay attention to the road when I drive, am very alert, and can't help but to notice people on their phones, looking at maps, picking their nose, whatever . . . It's not like people can look at the road with tunnel vision, and not notice these things.

Something must have really upset you about her post. Was it, hmmm, her signature perhaps? ;)
