    Communty-Policing question

I have to write a term paper in one of my classes about technology and community-policing.

For those of you whose departments are using a community-policing approach, I would like to know:

--- What technology/equipment you find helpful in implementing community-policing and how?

--- What technology/equipment (that you don't have yet) would you think would be helpful?

--- What kind of technology do you think might be coming in the future?

    Thanks a lot-

Here's a pretty good article on the principals, history, and future of community policing... Community policing, in my opinion, really doesn't involve a vast amount of technology... it really takes the technological piece out, and implements the human piece of policing. Sure, there are community policing tools, but the real goal, in my opinion, is to rehumanize a dehumanized society...

Sure, analysis and crime stats are important, and that takes technology....

Here's an article about one of Atlanta PD's community policing tools:

Powerpoint presentations, the projector that projects the ppt. Laser pointers. A nework (intranet ---not to be confused with internet) for indentification purposes (database of ppl). Some people may be advanced and have GPS in their unit. Hehe if you want to get really technical with it you could go on to say how laser printers print the material to be distributed to individuals. Also, the use of wireless technology by using the radio.

Eventally ---many many years down the road I believe each individual will be implanted with a GPS device so they can always be tracked under any circumstance. I also believe we will have a biometrics system where you would do a retinal scan or fingerprint scan to identify an individual.

I don't really see how LawGurl's message pertains to Community Policing at all, but whatever. The best example I ever saw was on my ride-along...the Sergeant stopping to talk to a troubled kid living at a group home. Probably made the kid's day, and who knows how much it changed his life, perhaps his views on police. THAT is community policing to me.

B/C the Q was "How does technology play a role in community policing?"and "What technology do you forsee being used in community policing?" Your answers could vary depending on if you are comming from the proactive or reactive policing perspective.

Community policing is not reactive, by definition.

The brutal truth is that community policing, much like programs such as DARE, are a feel-good way for departments to get grants and votes. Sure CP is a good thing when it's done with a real commitment, but it's my experience that that is not the initial motivation for it, and it doesn't last.
Again, this is MY opinion based on MY experiences. Your mileage may vary.

technology plays no role in Community policing. They are opposites of each other. Community policing is all about getting to know the community and them getting to know you. Walking around and talking to people on the street. Instead of driving around and only getting out after receving a radio call.

When I look at my agency I see, what I believe to be a real front runner in Community Policing. The PD holds stuff for everyone, Citizens Academies, Student Academies, Defensive Driver Classes, Senior Defensive Driving, Business Manager Academy, Apartment Manager Academy, the list goes on and on... a lot of people know many of the cops at our agency, The cops get to know quite a bit of people out there as well who they may have never met otherwise. I believe it is a valuable resource here, however; sometimes I believe there is too much emphasis on it, and the police department is becoming over-involved in the community.

This is a valid Community Policing issue. I hope the device can emit a searing brain pain jolt that is triggered by judges who issue warrants. Then all the police have to do is go into the Community and Police up all the screaming people. It would be real important for the judges to remember to turn off their "Brain Jolt System" when they go home. That way when Harvey the janitor comes in and wipes off the keyboard with that orange smelling spray cleaner that EVERYONE seems to be using now-a-days, he won't accidently mash a bunch of keys and set everyone in Utah a-screamin by mistake!!

I've seen the terms "community policing" and "problem-oriented policing" (or problem-solving policing) used interchangeably. I think they're two sides of the same coin and are different but complementary.

We just got a new police Chief here, and he is big on community policing. The way I see it, is if he really wants community policing to flourish, we need a lot more officers on the road. How can you take care of the community and get to know it if there are too many priority calls to take? It makes no sense to assume it can happen with a police force that is only large enough to cover the calls. Sure there are downtimes, but in a city of 700,000 or so, there are usually always calls to take.

Hire more cops (ME), and then talk about really instituting and sustaining a community policing model. Luckily, the Chief does want more cops on the street.
