Going on my first ride along!!

I’m going on a ride-a-long today. Can’t wait. Luckily I know the officer that I will be riding with. I met him about 6 months ago. He is a great guy who is willing to share information and give advice. He was actually just awarded the annual Life Savers Award. Him and a partner resuscitated a heart attack victim back in February. I’ll be riding from about 6pm to 11pm. It should be a good time to see some real police work.

Enjoy it!! My first ride along was a blast, not nearly long enough! Make sure you ask lots of questions! Hopefully you'll have a good night with some good calls.

Be observant, ask questions but not a thousand of them. Wear your seatbelt, don't get out unless the officer says you can, don't wear any wild clothing and try to not wear any with writing , NO police gear with you, sit back and enjoy/learn.

It was awesome. Before we even got into the car from the station where he (the officer) was picking me up at, we got a call about a fight in progress. We were doing about 90 through the city and he told me to get out and come with him once we arrived on scene. I got to get right in the middle of the action. Of course I stayed a few feet back so I didn’t get in the way, but I was still close enough to get a good feel for it. Later we answered a disturbance call with a possible weapon involved. He told me to stay in the car for that one, but once the crowd cleared he again had me get out and help him and the other officers to look for a gun that the suspect possibly tried to get rid of as we drove up. The rest of the time when we weren’t answering calls like that we drove around looking for stolen vehicles. He was having me read off license plate numbers as he punched them into his computer to run the tags. It was great. He was really good about everything. He told me what the different codes meant and stuff like that. Mostly I kept quiet and listened to what he had to say. My advice, if you haven’t gone on a ride along, go! Make sure you go with someone who works in the area with the most crime.

I've heard the syracuse pd sees alot of action. Supposedly there are some very high crime areas up there. I dunno the only places I've been up there are the Carrier Dome to heckle the 'Cuse and Dinosaur BBQ.

Sounds like you had fun... I'm suprised Syracuse is that busy. Now maybe you can tell me the best way to get to the Zoo there on Burnett?

Yeah, good luck. I have only been there a few times and it is darn near impossible to find.
But yeah, Syracuse cops have their work cut out for them. They don’t have enough people working. To get a good picture of what it is like compare the crime index in Syracuse to NY City.
