    CCW Senario(LEO only)

If you happen to see someone carrying concealed in a public place...lets say for example their jacket or coat flaps open briefly due to the wind...and you see a handgun in a concealment holster...or they bend over to pick something up...and you see the barrel of a handgun pop out...how do you treat the situation?

1.Do you assume the worst and walk over with your hand on your weapon...demanding to inspect their weapon and see their CCW?

2.Or since they haven't done anything to make you suspicious...do you just go on your way?

    3.Or do something I haven't said :D

I'm sure their is a great deal of grey area in this situation...but I'd like your take on it!

I was on the other end of this once... I was the CCW holder. I was stopped for a traffic violation... I immediately informed the officer that I was carrying, and he did place his hand on his firearm, although he didn't unsnap or draw his firearm. His partner, however, may have, but my attention was focused on the officer in my window.

Oh... I forgot about this one until I was just thinking about it... I had been to the shooting range one day, and threw a spent magazine in my glove box. Later that day, I was driving through Ohio when I was stopped by a trooper for speeding. He approached from the passenger side, and almost immediately noticed that I had a clip in my glove box. He politely, but firmly asked... Mr. *****, may I ask why you have a magazine for a semi-automatic Glock pistol in your glovebox.... I indicated the reason, and he asked that I keep my hands where he could see them.... he radioed my information in, came back clear, and he let me go on my way... I suspect though, that he probably had his firearm at his side....

I won't assume that any gun I see is legal until I've checked the person for a CCW. How they look/act and the surroundings are going to dictate whether I tactfully approach and ask for their permit or whether I draw and cover the person and prone them out. I've done both. Circumstances dictate.

Not a LEO but I have been carrying a gun on a permit to carry for almost 15 years. In the summer time I open carry. In all those years I have not had one negative interaction with a police officer. I have only had one ask me to show my permit and he was very polite. I read on the many boards I surf about how many people have a difficult time with the police when legally carrying. That just boggles my mind.

DC I understand that. What I have a hard time wrapping my mind around is those people who are legal that have a hard time with the cops.

    Norm,

I am willing to be that it also has a lot to do with the CCW permit-holders attitude.
