    Radio

What type of radio is needed to chat on radio frequencies with other officers? Such as a "car-to-car" frequency. A radio that both scans and I can "talk" on. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    If you're a civillian, it's simple. You can't. It's illegal.

The frequency depends on the department and the band they choose to use. Some use VHF-hi band ( 150 mhz) , some use the UHF band ( 450 mhz) and some use the UHF ( 800-900 mhz) band which in most cases is digital.

It would be unlawful to transmit on any of these frequencies without being licensed to do so and to use a radio that isn't FCC certified on those frequencies.

SOME departments have CB's but don't use them much. That would be the ONLY legal ( and practical) way to talk to an officer while he/she is on duty. I have a CB but usually don't even have it hooked up unless I am going out to do truck inspections.

You'll just have to be satisfied to listen via scanner. Can you imagine if we allowed John Q. Public to have access to our radios ?

I should add that in Edmonton Canada, they have a citizen patrol that uses GMRS radios ( General Mobile Radio Service) in which they do have contact with the PD. They ar enot police radios but a public spectrum of the radio band ( 450 mhz band) that you can buy a radio but you also need a license.

GMRS isnt even legal in Canada
and it isnt in the 450 Mhz band rather the 462-467 Mhz Repeater input, lol, not trying to be smart l o l
GMRS is only used in the US, although the freqs that used in GMRS in the us are the freqs that canada can use for business use (licensed)

Even here in the US no business, police agency can use GMRS
    only Personal licensed individuals
    How do i know this
