    Arrow What do you advise?

    Hello!
Hope everyone has had a pleasurable weekend. I am currently 18 years of age and a Senior in high school. I am going to be attending a four-year university in Texas in the Fall 04 term. My major is going to be in that of Business Management and Entrepreneurship (double-major). Moreover, a minor in Spanish.

I have been on several rideouts with various local police departments, but just recently have been riding with the Sheriffs Department which covers the whole county. Most of the calls are 10-15's and 10-16's anyway. But nonetheless, fun. I love running traffic with an officer it's so much fun. Especially when running code with people who won't stop. But enough of the "fun" stuff.

With my assumed degree plan, do you think I will have a hard time finding a job? Do I need something to give me a better edge over my competition? I can literally read, write and speak Spanish rather well. The purpose of the "minor" in Spanish is that of enriching my skills. Here in TX, it seems that the Hispanic/Latin race is outnumbered that of Caucassian statistics. Will the Spanish help me?

I know I am going to take psychology classes and such at Baylor Unviersity (http://www.baylor.edu) but I just would like to hear your guys' advise and suggestions. Thank you in advance. Yea..yea..I'm sure you were expecting "ya'lls and I reckon" but I am a newcomer to Texas. This is my third year here. Once again, I look forward to hearing from any fellow members.

    Be safe!

In 99% of the LE jobs out there, what your degree is in is not the important thing... only that you have one!

If I knew I was going into LE, I would have studied Spanish in high school & college.

Have you thought about joining a Explorers post? Great way to get experience/learn about LE. Check the Explorers section for more info,

From what Ive read, most departments don't really care what you have your degree in(as long as its not a forensics(sp) position or something like that). So take something that you'll be interested in and will do well in. I think a Business Management degree would probly help if you were trying to get promoted.

I'm also interested in Texas, but for the time being im stuck in western mass. Mainly interested in the DFW area departments. And a couple of them require 4 yr degrees(Arlington PD for example).

Different places use different systems for communication, so what a "10-15" or "10-16" is for you may not be the same for others. Could you use plain english please?

A second language and a degree ( along with a CLEAN background !!!!!! which includes no drug or alcohol arrests ) will make you a very GOOD candidate. When your frat buddies want you to go drinking , choose now what you will do as it could effect your future.
