    Policing/Security

Just read one of the news articles on this web site, do you ever see Policing being privatized? Please xplain your answeres so I can get a better understanding as to why you may think or may not think they will.

I feel that there is a chance only because everything else seems to be goig that way as a "cost effective measures" that the Government places on everything, anyways that is my two cents.

The enforcement of laws/regulations must be independant of any sense of impropriety. To be privatized would require that the police "make money" at enforcement. This would open up a whole Pandora's box of problems. Privatization may work in some areas but NOT law enforcement.

Pretty interesting to see how they can wear the badge "POLICE" while they are not real SFPD....

I mean why would someone consider calling them instead of the real SFPD.... It is shame for a city to have such private enterprise take over the police stuff because SFPD probably don't have the proper ressources to deal fast with all kind of crimes...

As long as answering alarms and closing stores... that is security ... any private security companies can do that .... I just don't see them wearing a police badge however....

It will never be privatised as there won't be a regulatory body to police it, and it will be open to abuse.

It's a hot topic in my country. In my opinion the two can complement one another if it's done properly. No security person I know (and I know a few because I occasionally teach on one of the advanced courses required for licensing) sees security as replacing police. I believe it was done in NJ some years ago in a city but I have no idea if it worked. Can't remember the city's name unfortunately (I want to say Essex but not sure).

There are a lot of Private police depts around. We have three in Atlanta alone. Both the railroad police depts and the CNN Center (aka Turner cops) police.

    Private Police

I am currently an officer at the Cedar Point Police Department. Its also a "private" police department; our jurisdiction in a large peninsula located in Sandusky, Ohio and we are surrounded by lake Erie.

There is a massive amusement park(Cedar Point) on the peninsula in which we do the security for. But we also do traffic enforcement and all other municipal police duties. And sometimes the city of Sandusky calls on us to help them out when they need backup or more manpower during a situation. The officers here are OPOTA(Ohio peace officer training academy) certified just like any other police officer in the state.

I'm from Michigan and just do this for the summer/seasonal. But there are guys that work there year round. I'm also going through Detroitls hiring process...So, I might be walking the thin blue line in Detroit within a year!
