    depends upon three things.

    state law

    department policy

    and you're location ( i.e. a bar)

In our department we are allowed to carry anywhere in the state off duty. The only restriction we have is if you have your gun on, you can not consume any alcohol.

I can carry anywhere in state including a place that serves alcohol ( as long as I don't imbibe) and ONE adjoining state which is Maryland. I am exempt from needing a permit or a Lethal Weapons Card ( what an armed security guard must have) unless I were to moonlight at a job in which I wanted to carry a gun. Then , I wold need the Lethal Weapon Card but I am exempt from the 2 week training requirement and can just get the card as long as I am an acitve/certified officer.

When I am out of state and not in a state that we are reciprocal with, I just carry my wits and my common sense. I use them a lot more than my weapon anyway.

But in my case, being federal, I can carry in all 50 states, on aircraft, and into bars or anyplace else that I desire.
GOOD point for our new or newer posters/readers to heed.

NOT A LEO, but as a hunter I know that any LEO is not allowed to carry a handgun while turkey hunting in New York, believe it or not. The regulations specify that hanguns are not to be carried while turkey hunting, even if the carrier is a police officer required to carry one. Naturally, an on duty cop would not be considered turkey hunting while on patrol.

Just thought that was an interesting fact which is pertinant to this discussion.

(I have learned to qualify my posts in this forum as 'not leo' as if to say, 'take it for what it's worth.)

i can carry anywhere in the state at anytime. exceptions being airport terminals (i think), but thats fairly new (post 9-11). states that are reciprocal are also added as places i can carry.
I do what I can do when I can do it.
