Any LAPD Officers here?

I am considering going through the LAPD process. Their salary seems pretty solid compared to the east coast but I know the cost of living is higher in southern CA. My question is what kind of life can one expect to live with a income of 80k to 90k a yr (projected household income) living in southern CA? Will I be living in a shoe box driving a beat up car? Do most LAPD officers live pretty well?

I personally know a few LAPD officers, and they don't live that much better than the average person out here. I've been looking at houses around me, and they are freaking expensive in So Cal.

There is a guy that is from here and ended up working at LAPD after a short stint in the Air Force. After LAPD he did some security work for Hugh Heffner before returning home to SC several years later. The cost of living in LA was so high that he had his house paid for there and sold it. With selling an average house there with the cost of living rate he made enough off it to buy a mansion here.
