Active duty military about to pursue career in law enforcement

I am currently active duty Army and will be leaving the service soon to pursue a career in law enforcement. I was wondering if wearing Class A dress uniform to the oral board would be appropriate and possibly make a better impression, or if traditional suit and tie would be better. Thank you for your assistance.

well since your currently active duty probably your Alphas would look better since that is your formal attire, your military not civilian so im sure it would be alright. Im not positive though i could be wrong.

I disagree. I would recommend a suit and tie. Nothing wrong with wearing the A's but I think its a little much. You are applying for a non military job so go in like that. Dont' worry, they'll know your military. I'm also active duty and went into my interview in a suit and tie.

You should look into the Federal Marshals. They are never hiring to civilians. Right now the are only accepting applications from active duty military or someone who has been separated for only 90 days. No regular civilians can apply. I missed my 90-day window and now I have to wait until they are accepting applications from the general public. That might not be until 2005 or later.
    Check it out. http://www.usdoj.gov/marshals/
In answer to your question, I would say go with a suit and tie.

I agree with Cecil. We will know you are active duty military. You needn't try to ram it down our throats. Wear a nice suit and tie and have a good haircut( as I am sure you already do !) How you conduct yourself and answer questions is what will earn you the points. Don't forget to inquire about veterans preference points, some dept's offer them and it can really help you out. Good Luck !

One more thing. I am not saying you will do this, however a piece of advice. DO NOT develop an attitude of being superior because you are military. Remember in the interview and in any future dealings that when it comes to LE you are at the bottom of the barrel, regardless of rank and/or experience in the military. Same rule of when you start out in the military applies in LE. Keep your mouth shut and your ears open. Nobody really cares if you are Super Sgt Ranger Bad ***.

I think a nice suit and a tie will be the best choice for you to go to an interview with. I have a few army buddies who got hired with the department where my father works at and they all (3 of them) wore a nice suit and tie and got the job.Good luck with your interview! keep us posted.

Dittos on suit and tie. Learn as much as you can about the dept./agency you are applying to and prepare for the interview questions.

I started hunting a law enforcement job when I was about to get out the military and I have to agree that a suit and tie is better suited for an interview. Though I was tempted to wear the Class A's, I stuck with the traditional suit and tie.

Thanks for all the advice. Also just a sidenote - I posted this in the 'Ask a Cop' section. No offense, but if you're not a cop, I don't want to hear it.

It may help if when you post your question that you include that you only wish Law Enforcement Officers to respond. Although the area is ask-a-cop, there is no telling who will reply to you.

Some of us have taken the time to submit evidence of our employment to the owner of this site who himself is a police officer , this is how we get the verified Leo tag next to our name. Not all LEO's have done this but it will give you an added measure of security that those with the tag, are for real.

As MSCAP stated you might want to identify that LEO's only answer your question. Most that have the verified LEO for sure are the police, however those of us who are lazy, such as myself are police officers (ten years to be exact), and you can choose to believe me or not. I take no offense because I have not yet verified myself. Any how, good luck in your search.
