What kinda of courses do you take at a police academy?

Hi, I'm 14 and I'm currently living in Texas. I was wondering if you knew if I need to go got college to become a cop and how long? Also when your in the academy I know you do running, sit ups, push ups etc. but what book or subject courses do you take while at the academy? Also if you were to get into an academy, whiether through college or not, and you did not make it through the academy would you have any other chances to go back to an academy to become a cop? What is the written exam supposed to be over?

The department that I work for does not require any college education. However I would certainly encourage you to attend college before becoming a policeman for several reasons. Throughout your career things might happen that cause you to desire a different profession or worse you might get hurt and find yourself unable to be a policeman anymore. College also offers an opportunity to learn good communication skills and the opportunity to experience different cultures. Even though some departments do not require that you go to college, you should definately consider it.

Here's what I think about your questions:

"I was wondering if you knew if I need to go got college to become a cop and how long?"

College is not a requirement for all departments. This qualification differs depending upon the department in question. However, it is highly recommended that you should attend college and earn college hours. Preferably a college degree of some kind.

"Also when your in the academy I know you do running, sit ups, push ups etc. but what book or subject courses do you take while at the academy?"

There are a variety of studies (in TX) which includes but is not limited to: arrest, search & seizure, Code of Criminmal Procedures, Penal Code, Traffic Code, defensive techniques, firearms training, first aid, investigative techniques and skills, driving skills, etc.

"Also if you were to get into an academy, whiether through college or not, and you did not make it through the academy would you have any other chances to go back to an academy to become a cop?"

Depends upon the academy in question but, generally speaking, it is possible to go through another academy, (not necessarily the same academy), if you don't make it through the first time.

"What is the written exam supposed to be over?"

If you are talking about the state peace officer licensing exam, it'll be over the subject matter you've studied in the academy. Everyone in Texas has to take a written licensing exam to become a state licensed law enforcement officer.

Hope that helps answer some of your questions.

In Minnesota the minimum requirement is a two year degree (If you want to get into some of the top end agencies, a four year degree is required).

The Curriculum in the skills program covers criminal investigation, legal issues in law enforcement, criminal & traffic codes, patrol operations, and law enforcement integrated practicum.
