The deal in Michigan is -- if you don't have it WITH YOU when pulled over, it doesn't matter. You get to pay the $300 fine regardless. The judge will even tell you that his hands are tied and that he has NO discretion in the matter.

Ouch.. Now that's just plain insane. I've seen Wreckless Driving fines cheaper than that. Put somebody's life in jeopardy, smack on the wrist...Take the govt's money, and LOOKOUT! Just seems odd to have that heavy of a fine for an "Administrivia" infraction.

"Dido." Usually, they will dismiss the charge, and call it, "complied w/ law," but they have no authority to dismiss the court costs. Have with you, the date you purchased the sticker, w/ the appropriate vehicle the sticker goes to, just to show evidence of prior purchase, before the issuance of the ticket. Not to get you on the fire w/ the cop, but you may want to bring up the fact that the vehicle wasn't on a public highway and not in operation at the time of the issuance of the ticket. You may want to look up the county ordinances and be knowledgable before you shoot yourself in the foot on this part though. Just some thoughts.

Update on loony MI law - the $300 fine for not having proof of insurance WITH you when pulled over, even if you ARE insured:

The law was repealed. Those who paid the fine (and were truly insured and only were without the proof when pulled over) will get a refund, too.
