    Best Route To Take

First off I live in Michigan. When i start college this fall i plan on going for four years and getting a Bachelors in Criminal Justice. After college would it be better for me to get MCOLES certified and put myself through an academy and then go out and try to get hired or would it be better to get MCOLES certified and try and find a department to hire me and put me through their academy. I would like to work as a city or township cop in a medium sized town.

The way you get MCOLES certified is to have graduated the academy and a department hires you then advises MCOLES of the hiring and then they activate your certification. The academy all depends on what 4 year school you go to. Most 4 year schools like Ferris, Grand Valley, Northern Michigan U, Western Mi U, and Lake State all have the academy as part of your bachlors degree. Meaning you get your degree upon completion of the academy. It's up to you on what you want to do, but I wouldn't look for any department out side of Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids or possibly Saginaw to sponser you to the academy. Pay for it and accomplish it your selfis all you can do now days. Good luck. BTW where in Mi are you???

I know where Flushing is I am from Port Huron about 80 minutes from you. You will have to take the written and agility test anyway. Take the written now cause once you pass it you will never have to take it again, but the agility test is only good for 6 months. Take the written then hold off until you are sure which academy you want to attend and then take it a few months prior to applying to the academy. The entire written and agility testing costs $100. $60 for thr written and $40 for the physical agility test. You can take that at the Flint Regional Academy in Flint. If you just want to go to an academy I recomend Kirtland's Academy in Roscommon. the student to instructor ratio is like 1:3. Any more questions just PM me.....
