    Question Police Academy

I know some of the members have posted their experiences, and I enjoyed learning about what has gone on there, but I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions I had about the academy:

1.) How long (on average) does it last?
2.) What exactly do you do?
3.) Do you live there during your enrollment, or can you commute?

I know some of those questions may have been a bit on the no brainer side, but I am totally clueless about this subject :D .

It depends on the academy for the most part.
    1) mine was 16 weeks
    2) Lots of class time learning the law and other related topics, defensive tactics, driving, firearms, etc.
    3) we were allowed to go home everynight and had the weekends off.

Depends on where you go to the academy and for what type of agency.
Here in our state, a basic police academy lasts as little as 12 weeks, and as long as 26 weeks.
You learn a variety of law enforcement topics, law, firearms, defensive tactics, etc.
The basic academy you attend during the day and go home at night, and is off weekends. State Patrol academy is live in.

Our new recruits go to a 6 1/2 month basic school they comute back and forth to every day. The vast majority of the day is spent in the classroom, with the exception of an hour or so in the morning for PT.

Our academy is 5 months, is held at a college campus, is a daily commute with no overnight accomodations. It certainly reminded me of basic training with all of the marching and PT but beyond that a lot of classroom instruction on laws and procedures on how to be a police officer.

Depends on the Agency, like these guys said.
