Sorry, guess I generalized to much there or did not present my chain of thought like I intended - we lost a person that might have been the one who found the cure for cancer, been the next president or touched someone elses life in a positive way. As for failing - I meant along the lines of failing to educate the general public on the "signs" that I mentioned, providing mental health care without the stigma that usually goes along with seeking such help or the cost etc.

i understand what you mean as far as what the potential of a person was or is. my personal opinion is that you can educate the public as much as you want, but if a person had made up their mind to do it, very little can be done to stop them. just look at the say no to drug, and MAAD campaigns.

K9: Thank you. My partner took this way out and I've never seen this site before. I think this site is more for the seople left behind rather than those who commit the act.

Who gets the call to respond when things go bad ?? People don't call 911 because they are having a wonderful day.

We get called to...

Drunken domestics
Vehicle accidents, sometimes with serious injury or death
Violent drunken people
People in fights
Disturbances in bars
Shots fired
Bank robberies
Assaults
Alarms at 3 am
Traffic stop at 3 am of a car load of "hoofties"

the list goes on.

Those that who are not LEO's are not being condemned here but those who are know that year after year of being exposed to the underbelly of humanity, being threatened, assaulted, sometimes shot at, etc just wears at you as a person. It is no excuse for suicide but the life we live and the daily lives of others that we handle can be a load on your shoulders. Without some way of inside help ( something that cops are not known at being good at), it can be very stressful.
