Accused of Shoplifting

Hi i need some opinions on what i should do.. I was shopin at best buy i am 19 years of age..I found a video card i like so i pick up the box and walk around with it and just browse and look at other things..Well i just wanted to make sure it would run right on my computer so i open up the box and take out the unit.. there were people around me and i didnt want it to make it look like i was stealing anything so i take the unit out and close the box.. I take the unit to the bathroom where i can look at it better without people thinkn im shoplifting.While i was in the bathroom an employee comes in and it totally freaked me out...On my way out someone stops me as i was walkin towards the place i put the empty box the unit was once in where i was goin to return the unit.I had placed the unit in my shirt to try and make it look like i wasnt stealin anything in the bathroom if i walked out with the unit you know. But they showed me th empty box told me to open my shirt i did and they saw what i had... I told them i was puttin the unit back..and that i went to the bathroom to put it back.. i wasnt tryin to steal anything and now im being taken to court for shoplifting becuase they saw me concealing the unit when i was only trying to make it look like i wasnt stealing... I need opinions on what you think i should do say guilty of it when i wasnt tryin to steal at all i was merely just lookin at the unit or say guilty.. THAnk you guys Jep :(

there is a few things I don't understand. You said the you took the "unit" out of the box to see if it is compatable with your computer. Wouldn't that info be on the outside of the box?
Then you go into the bathroom with the "unit" to look at it so people wouldn't think you were stealing it and on the way out you put it under your shirt so you can put it back in the box?
If I saw your sneaking around like that I would have thought your intentions were to steal.

Man the next thing we are going to start hearing is I wasn't trying to steal the car, I saw it running at the gas pump and was thinking of buying that kind of car so I took it out for a test drive. I swear I was heading back to bring the car back when you guys stopped me...GIVE ME A BREAK

NO sympathy here. In PA, concealment in and of itself constitutes the crime of Retail Theft. Your whole story isn't holding water with me. And I doubt you will do well in front of a judge, but you are certainly free to try.

jep: I udnerstand your concern and I feel that you have simply been misunderstood.

The harsh comments in some of the posts above must make you feel unwelcome and a little embarrased.

I suggest that you obtain the services of a really good, not to mention expensive, lawyer and defend this case right to the very end.

The scenario you presented would definately pass the test of what 'an average person' would do and I think you have been singled out and you should defintely be considered the victim in this case.

Doesn't every one open up an item they intend to purchase inside the store, sample it and if it isn't of merchantible quality return it to the shelf? Buy a can of coke, taste it to make sure it isn't too cold or too warm and have the correct level of carbonation? Most people I know open up DVD packages and look at the quality of the disk and even take it home, in their back pocket, to make sure its compatable with their DVD player.

Mate. Get hold of that lawyer and get yourself in front of a jury.

You stepped in it. Wipe off your feet and have your day in Court. The Judge will know what to do.

This guy is too funny. You tried to steal it. Why would you go to a bathroom to see the item better. As far as I can tell your talking about a computer part. In which case there is no way by looking at the part to tell if it is compatible with your computer. All that info is on the box as someone already mentioned in this thread.
