Big department, okay morale, the mayor recently fired their Chief whom many officers didn't like. Although I dont' think the Mayor is too popular either with the rank and file. Decent pay, although other smaller depts in the Metroplex pay better. Pretty good retirement. Dallas has a god amount of crime so no shortage of action. Couldn't tell you much about the academy however, other than whats on the DPD website.
Correction, morale is through the floor. Many officers are only staying around because they are close to retirement. Retirement for them is VERY good. I believe it's 96% of max pay. Apparently the academy has fallen off from what they were a few years ago. Find another department. You'll be paid better, and you'll have a better experience.
saying the morale is through the floor there is putting it mildly. I've heard not a single cop there say much of anything good about their working conditions (real and mental) in some time.

Lol, I stand corrected. Scratch that dept off the list of places to apply at.

As someone else put it, from what I have generally heard, morale is STILL pretty low. And they recently got rid of a very poor chief whose legacy will likely reverberate for quite sometime. I suspect it might be sometime before DPD will recover from all the long term "damage" they've sustained.
In my opinion, I would not recommend going to DPD for the time being. I think a lot will depend upon WHO their next Chief will be and what actions that new Chief will do to remedy all of the problems and issues that department is facing.
