i am from new jersey originally, living in TN currently. yes NJ living is higher, but the pay is more then the cost of living difference. NJSP starts at 56,000 dollars a year. that is more then you will make starting with any LEO job, just stay out of the city/metro areas and you will be banking

Many of your urban area agencies usually have some type of out-of-town application process in place where you complete a lot hiring process within a few days or so. But, I would recommend that you check with each agency you plan to apply with to find out if they have such a thing in place.

Personally, I would suggest that you narrow you list of departments down to something a little more reasonable and realistic. I my humble opinion, applying to an excessive number of agencies does NOT equal to bettering your chances of getting hired. This is a common misperception a lot of people have. In fact, this approach can possibly work against you for a number of reasons.

Finally, a few other expenses that must be factored in are (but not limited to):
    food
    hotel accomodations
transcripts and any other document expenses
Miscellaneous other fees (For example, some departments may have application fees).

BUT,...if you are independently wealthy and can afford all the flying and expenses...good luck...

I also tested from out of state, yes it does suck and it is expensive. You do not really know the geography of the area that well so you have to find the place you are going to before hand so you are not late. What really sucks is if you shell out the cash and do not get the job you are out quite a bit of $$$. I would recommend you reconsider Aurora unless you REALLY want to be in the $hit. It is a high crime area, worst then Denver by some accounts. It is well known around here that you are not to buy a house in Aurora because you will never be able to resale (after you find out that your neighbors are gang bangers). Ft. Collins is a great department to work for and they top out in salary within 3 years at over 60k a year (I believe).
    Happy hunting!

Another thing to consider when applying to depts across the country is their physical agility test. You need remember that places like Colorado have a higher alltitude which can effect you when testing. I remeber the first time I went out to CO, I was worn out after only about 5 min of running and at the time I was a conditioned distance runner from the midwest. Somewhere on the internet I once saw a chart for runners that told you how much extra time it would take you run a mile based on every 1000 ft. of elevation.
